God began convicting me that ministry in a Multicultural/multiethnic community should be multi-ethnic and multicultural
1. The Gospel is multi-ethnic
2 Cor 5:16-20 The gospel is a message of reconciliation. Reconciliation between man and God and man and his fellow man.
The controversy in the book of Galatians was “do people have to start to live in a traditional Jewish way to be saved? Paul’s message is NO Gal 2:16.
Gal 3:26-28 takes it even further to include people groups which represent the whole world. The Gospel is for everyone!
2. The beginning of the church was multi-ethnic
In Acts 10, very soon after the church began, Peter begins to share the gospel with non Jewish people. They believe the message of Jesus and are baptized and added to the church and Peter says
“Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.”
The Idea of non-jewish people being saved is the topic of a council of the apostles and early church leaders in Acts 11 that resulted in the statement “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” They were all part of the same body of believers
3. The end of the story is multi-ethnic
Revelation prophetically speaks of the future gathering around the throne of God in 7:9. The picture of the church in eternity is a blend of people from all over the world and from different (still distinct) cultures worshiping God together. If that is what we WILL be is that not what we SHOULD be striving to be now?
4. Our testimony is tied to us being multi-ethnic.
The world is divided and fractured because of sin.
In Eph. 3 Paul talks about how the mystery of the church is that the gospel is for all people
Ephesians 3:4–6 ESV
4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
He goes on to say that it is through this mystery that the universe will see the manifold wisdom of God
Ephesians 3:10 ESV
10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
When the world looks at the church and sees division, they see nothing special. If the world looked at the church and saw diversity and unity, they could see the beauty and wonder of the wisdom of God in the gospel.
I became convinced and convicted that we should do whatever it takes to reach our WHOLE community but that meant a new approach and it is often hard to adopt new approaches in established churches.

Challenge from the Word - Nate
1 Corinthian 9:19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law.
21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak.
I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
There are many challenges to doing ministry in a multiethnic/multicultural context.
One of the biggest is putting into practice what Paul is modeling in this passage.
As human beings, we have a set of things that we hold up as “Good” and “Normal”. Some of those things are biblical mandates. “Husbands, love your wives.” Some of those things are personal preferences or our cultural norms. “Sports Fandom” “Music Styles” “political ideologies” Those things are not necessarily bad or wrong BUT those are things Paul is talking about in the passage we just read.
To reach people we might have to become like them and give up our preferred music
To reach people we might have to become like them and change some of the words we use
We say yes! We will do that! We welcome ANYONE to come to our church! I will talk to ANYONE!
But what I have realized over the years looking at my own heart and the people around me in churches what we ACTUALLY mean is
I will be all things to all people.
All things except uncomfortable
All things except afraid
All things except anything that is not exactly my favorite
Thats a tough pill to swallow.
Paul talks more about this idea in Philippians 2
Phil 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus laid aside everything to provide the way to salvation and to bring Glory to God the father.
Christlikeness requires us to adopt and others first mentality- Keeping Christ and HIS kingdom as supreme and being willing to lay aside my opinions, my comfort, my fears, my cultural norms and expectations, and even my politics for the sake of relationship and the subsequent ability to make disciples.
None of these things should get in between us and the lost seeing and hearing the Gospel.
Example of coming late being offensive to white culture
