Introduction

Open to Joel 2 and we will start in verse 28 this evening Joel 2:28-32*
Last time we saw the centrality of repentance.
Does I am sorry make sense when we have a just God?
Only in Jesus, “And my people shall never again be put to shame.” (Joe 2:27, ESV)
“This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Ro 3:25–26, ESV)
Only the repentant get this mercy.
Let’s be clear lest we are accused of preaching works salvation
Repentance is not your work.
Repentance is granted by God
Repentance is the natural response of the regenerated heart.
Repentance is faith in action.
are clear on this point
“18 When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” (Ac 11:18, ESV)
Paul says a work approved by God is one who
“correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. (2 Ti 2:25, ESV)
Repentance in a later concept, The early and later rains are refrenced in verse 23 and the Prophet is connecting the readers mind to Duet, where the Lord said,
“he will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. 15 And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full. 16 Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; 17 then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and you will perish quickly off the good land that the LORD is giving you.” (Dt 11:14–17, ESV)
If a person repents, turns and recognizes the only one God,
And herein we see the Cristocentricitry of the text.
The read in Duet could not know what we know,
The the only way to recognize the one God is thought the one Son.
They did know there was one coming, the messiah that would crush the serpents head.
Let’s Read
Joel 2:28–32 ESV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
May God Bless The Reading of His Holy, Infallible, and Sufficient Word
Let’s Pray

Transition

There is a lot of confusion about the day of the Lord.

Body

Pouring out the Spirit

I mentioned last week a popular Pentecostal, and incorrect doctrine of the early and later rain.
In short this Pentecostal doctrine teaches that the early “rain” is the first out pouring at Pentecost was the early rain and there will be or is another out pouring happening right before the end.
There are a myriad of problems with this interpretation but one thing that is correct is that the Holy Spirit was poured out.
Someone that knows their scripture knows that Peter quotes this text and says, this is fulfilled.
“But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17  “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20  the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21  And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” (Ac 2:16–21, ESV)
Notice Peter didn’t stop at verse 29. Its verse 32 and he says what you have seen is what Joel was talking about.
A lot of people want to make verse 30-31 about the future.
Mater of fact if you, if you google this passage you will get 1000 articles linking it with Revelation 6.
But Peter says you have already seen this, what he is talking about.
“45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. [John tells us “ When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (Jn 19:30, ESV)] “51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (Mt 27:45–54, ESV)
Notice the centurion didn’t say this was a son of one of the gods.
That's what you would expect from Roman right
These events convinced this Pagan about who Jesus was.
This is where we enter the now and not yet,
“Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” (Heb 2:8–9, ESV)
This is why I am A-millennial because it is it the that handles this now and not yet, better then another.
Optimistic A-millennial if anyone wants the know the specific flavor of A-millennial since there are many.
Some people are turning red right now and foaming as the mouth, some are smiling knowingly, and others are ready to give me a fist bump.
This is the point of all of this, yes eschatology maters, how you handle this text maters, when Peter says to the first century Jews, You have see this happen, it doesn't do for us to go well, but.
No the great day of the Lord happened the apostle said so.

Transition

Speaking of the now and not yet, all believers have had to live in this relative. There were things revealed in Joel that had not yet happened for Petter and the author of Hebrews that have happened for us.

To Escopay

Joel 2:32 ESV
32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
I titled section to escopay.
Peter stopped in verse 31 because being lead by the Holy Spirit he understood that this escape had not happened yet.
Any mediocre student of History knows about the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD.
The Christians escaped just like the Prophet said they would.
So where are we?
We are in the part where the stone grows to fill the whole earth.
It does not do to rush to the end or live like the end will never come.
We are in the part where the virgins are waiting for the bridegroom.
Make sure you lamps are full.
We are in the part where the servants wait for the masters return
dont be a slothful servant.
We are in the part where to each talents have been given
use them for the kingdom
It does not do to be confused about these things right now brothers and sisters.
There is a lot of confusion
Let us be clear, there is one name under heaven by which men must be saved.
The Jews, the Greeks, the barbarian, the slave, the free, the rich, the poor, will come and sit at the table with Abraham when they repents and put there faith in Jesus. No one else will. No one else has the right to be called the children of God.
If we confuse this issue, we do a disservice to our king and to our hearers.

Conclusion

Next week charterer 3 of Joel where we will see there is still a land of milk and honey for the people of God.

Benediction

Numbers 6:22–26 ESV
22 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them, 24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
