Being Not Good
Separation
We spent 4 Sundays on Saved by What?
Faith
Grace
Substitutionary Atonement
The Work of God— Christ
Now we have spoken the last two weeks on Saved to What?
Love God
Come After Him
So as we pick up today we move forward to the idea of being saved to:
Let Go!
Let’s read our focal passage this morning:
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
If we grab our verse in context…we must jump back momentarily to vs. 27
Matthew 11:27 ESV
27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
The Son is the One Who reveals the Father to us.
So Jesus is calling out to those who are listening and exclaiming such a revelation in that moment. His revelation is in fact the Father and The Grace Offered to be in Relationship with Him by the Work of the Son, The Faith His Work, and the Belief Upon His name.
So!

“Come to” Him

Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
We must point to the fact that Jesus is not calling those who are well, righteous, trained, or holy....
But Jesus calls the hurting, the overwhelmed, those who need, those who are broken, those whose burdens are tumultuous.
We have to get to the heart of what Salvation truly is…It is the work of God towards those who could not, can not, and will not be able to save themselves.
It is for the Poor in Spirit.
It is for those who can not save themselves…The recognition!
He is exclaiming, “take off your yoke, lay your burden down, leave the struggle with the Lord.”
The outflow of Coming to Him is Rest!

Find Rest In Him

Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Notice that Jesus is giving a promise—it’s a security.
He says, “I will give you rest”
He is promising things to change, that He bares the burden, He moves the bar, He changes the direction, He makes new, He secures.
We come to Him because He is good and there is none like Him. Not one!
As the Psalmist says, We can taste and see that He is good. Psalm 34:8
Psalm 34:8 ESV
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Because He is a secure refuge and we are saved to Come to Him.
We are saved to Love Him
We are saved to cherish Him
We are save to Rest in the secure rest He offers.
John 6:37 ESV
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
You see as the Father draws and gives us to the Lord and the Lord reveals the Father and there is a security and a hope.
All the Father gives will come
Whoever comes He receives
And those He receives He secures.
We find Rest and refuge in Him.
We are not just coming to Him, but we are letting Go because we can be raw, real, vulnerable, and comforted in the freedom He offers.

Let Go!

Matthew 11:29 (ESV)
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
As we take off our yoke and let it go.
As we come to him we leave behind the burden.
To Come to Him is to Let Go!
Let Go of the reigns, Let go of the wheel, Let Go of the burdens and leave them with Him.
He says, “Take my Yoke” Those of you who have plowed or worked a team of animals understand the working of a yoke. It is normally placed around the necks of a team of animals to utilize them together as they are directed.
The animals are trained together to equally pull. But as you put an animal with a little experience…It can help to train the other animal.
Under His yoke we plow ahead at His direction and discretion.
We are surrendering and submitting.
We are Saved to Let Go and Let God!
We Learn from Him in conjunction with others.
In the learning is the realization of His Gentleness
In his rest, learning, and gentleness we find comfort.

Find Comfort!

Matthew 11:29 (ESV)
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
We find comfort/rest for our souls as we let go.
The comfort leans us into the peace of God.
Paul reminds us:
Philippians 4:7 (ESV)
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 4:1–3 (ESV)
1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.
2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.
3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,...

Why?

Matthew 11:30 ESV
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
He bares our load and leads us on His path.
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
He offers
He remains
He Refreshes

Walking Away, But In...

Receive.
Surrender
Let Go!
