But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.

What is the gift of Prophecy?

1>Prediction of future event(s) 2>The prophetic Office that comes from God 3>The exercise of prophesying 4> A ministry that enables others through the word 5> A prophecy from God’s word that can come from any believer 6> a word from God that comes out of the local church body 7>

What is the context of Prophecy?

2 Peter 1:20-21

2 Peter 1:20–21 NIV84
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Who can be a prophet?

Anyone can speak a prophetic word, but that doesn’t make them a prophet.

Acts 13:2

Acts 13:2 NIV84
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

A prophet is given the office (authority) from God.

God’s gift of prophecy is given according to our faith walk Romans 12:6 “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.” And it always must encourage love of the church family Romans 12:9 “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.”

What constitutes a prophecy?

It is meant to encourage or challenge believers so their faith will grow.

It can be a warning challenging a change of direction?

Ezekiel 3:20-21

Ezekiel 3:20–21 NIV84
“Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. Since you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself.”

Prophecies have rules

It must come from God only

1 Corinthians 14:6

1 Corinthians 14:6 NIV84
Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

They need to be paid attention to

Revelation 1:3

Revelation 1:3 NIV84
Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

They need to be followed

Revelation 22:7

Revelation 22:7 NIV84
“Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.”
We can’t change or alter any of it.

Revelation 22:18-19

Revelation 22:18–19 NIV84
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
