Sunday School
We're doing today with David and Punishment. And so we are going to just start right in with if you have everyone has a book right in with our lesson 11 beginning with second Samuel. 11:2 in may actually jump around and the the reading that we have throughout the week kind of feels in these areas. So for those of us that have been setting throughout the week though, the printed text is jumping around we understand the the flow of the account. So we will will read what are our scripture printed text is. 2nd Samuel 11 + 2 and it came to pass in an Eventide that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the King's house in from the roof. He saw a woman washing herself and the woman was very beautiful to look upon and David sense and inquired after the woman and one said is not this mashiba the daughter of Elam and the wife of Uriah the hittite and David sent me Messengers and took her. And he came and she came and unto him and he lay with her for she was purified from her uncleanness and she returned on to her house and the woman conceived and sent and told David. And said, I am with child and it came to pass in the morning that David wrote a letter to joab and sent it by hand by the hand of Uriah. And he wrote in the letter saying sent you your riot at the Forefront of the hottest battle and retire you from him that he may be smitten and die and it came to pass when you're able to reserve the city that he assign Uriah on to a place where he knew that Valiant men were and the men of the city went out and fought with Joanne and there fell some of the people in the service of David and Uriah the hittite died also then Joe absent and told David all the things concerning the war. And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead she mourned for her husband. And when the morning was passed David Cent and fetched her to his house and she became his wife and bear him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord and David said unto Nathan I have sinned against the Lord and Nathan said into David the Lord also has put away. Thy sin Val shalt not die. How be it because By this device has given great occasion to the enemy of the Lord to blaspheme the child. Also that is born unto the show surely die and Nathan departed under his house and the Lord struck the child that uriah's wife bear unto David. And it was very sick. A man in the golden text wherefore hast thou despise the Commandment of the Lord to do evil in his sight. Now has killed Uriah and his taking his wife to be their life. so they said we've read the in-between part. So I talked about this is kind of like bricks and then there's the mortar that fills everything in so let's go to
Exodus 20 and 17. We know what the word of the Lord says and David knew what the word of the Lord said to didn't eat. And as a Jewish person and they are you know, the Ten Commandments that's what they stand on, right. And so if we look at Exodus.
20:17 of which are the Ten Commandments what we're just going to read the one that pertains to our lesson today.
Anyone have that you would like to read it?
Might be able to stop right there you can go ahead.
Okay. Let's go right back to verse 18 what they Neighbors. Or anything that is our neighbor. So we're we're back here at at our first verse and I printed text and says evening evening David A Rose off of his bed. So we've been taking a nap and he woke up and walk them to his balcony the Kings Roofing and he saw him a woman now. if he can see it from his balcony that has to be what a neighbor right so he could see her washing herself and she was very beautiful said, you know, so he looked and he saw that but then he he did inquire who is He knew who you were or was that was one of his own people in his army. And so we see here that he definitely is going against this Commandment that they're very staunch and in living by The Ten Commandments, but you know, the Bible says that a man is tempted of his own lust and so we know that David and kings and this was the thing with Israel you remember that the Lord wanted to be Israel's King didn't want them to have a a king but since they wanted a king like the other nations the Lord allowed we've talked about, you know that he was tall and he was fair looking and this was who was selected but the way that Heathen Nation kind of speak to their their greatness is in war we've talked about when they conquer some another kingdom a cut the train and they sew it on to theirs and that makes them have a longer train. So it's about conquering it's about showing wealth and power that about your armies and with the Heathen Nations. It was also about having a lot of you not having a harem having a lot of women whether they were wives or concubines and As you know, thanks be to God we're saved and he is our King and we are the bride and there's only one Church, you know, we don't have to worry about and for spiritually and pure and wanting to mingle other things that are of a religious nature with our worship of the one true king. Who is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but we see and we know that David had a weakness now. Let's go to let me see. Where do I have that at?
Deuteronomy 17 7
in Deuteronomy 17 + 7, is that right? Teen or do I have it backwards 17 and 17. So this is 17 + 17. And this is the guideline for a king.
Okay. Well someone read that.
That's it right there. So so a king. This is for Israel's Kings. They are not to multiply wives because their heart can be turned away now who has an example of that?
Solomon right and so the Lord knowing this he has said he stated they shouldn't this is how this is how a king should govern himself. He shall not multiply unto himself. Why is that his heartbeat? I'm not away. But now let's go to 2nd Samuel 5 + 13 2nd Samuel 5 + 13
and the reason I can stay till 5.
+ 13
okay. So with him having multiple wives that says wives and concubines but he he's already been given the guidelines and he's not supposed to do that. So we see that he has a weakness.
He has a weakness here. But we also in this is kind of a side note. We know that cause also of the many wives there was jealousy among the children. There was rape there was murder. You know, there was a rebellion and so all of this came from David not adhering to what the Lord has said in the first place. And like I said, that's a side note, but we want to we want to evaluate David for who he who he is was and because there is some skewing as we read what we see in the Sunday School lesson. We want to keep it on point. We're not you know looking at that summer of what was presented in in our Sunday school text. We're dealing with David's sin and Punishment and David had send before this and we're going back to the original sins. And it says your weakness, you know, what is it? What's that will find you or something like that? and so
yes, sin will find you will find you out. And so this happens to be his weakness in it, you know.
He already had wives and concubines multiple wives and concubines at this point. So let's keep that in mind. So it said in Davidson and inquired after the woman and one said is not this but that Eva the daughter of helium the wife of Uriah the hittite and then David sent the messenger and
For her and she came he lay with her. and she was purified from her uncleanness and she returned, you know onto her home so we know according to her cycle and the. Of
the process of purification that she was not pregnant because her husband was in in the Army and so the fact that she conceived when she was with David. We understand that to be what another sin and let's go look at that because we find that and where do I have in Leviticus? 20 + 10
cuz you know, I love through the Old Testament, but the thing of it is is this is what anchors us and yes, and so
Anyone, yes, please.
Another man's wife.
Which is amazing.
Okay, so who's been put to death? Both of them, right? Okay, and then yeah.
Well, we we don't know I mean typically, you know, when the king orders somebody even of his wives, you know, they have to come and be of service to him and you know, when there's multiple wives they you know, they're waiting for that opportunity. I didn't particularly care for the material kind of pointed out, you know, well, you know, maybe she was trying to seduce him being up there. No, no, no, you know know he saw her he wanted her in his lustful weakness and he inquired about her. Found out exactly who she was, but even if he didn't know who she was she wasn't here. And so, you know, there's there's issues with this but to find out that she was someone else's wife. She was a neighbor he knew who she you know that he was the wife of someone in his army just has a lot of troubling.
Could've just turned away. He knew he knows all of this. You know, we know our own areas. We know them and it doesn't take someone else to say you're wrong, you know them and that's really what I'm I'm wanting to to drive home is this is David's in this is an area of weakness. We've just come off of consecration, you know, we can be vulnerable after Victory, you know, and so just for us to know our self and that sin does is not without consequence where you going right at something. so says
and the woman conceived and she told David that she was with child. We know that David tried to have her husband come home and and be with his wife, but he was a man of character and would not he said my man and you know, the generals and everyone else they're out there sleeping in the field and I'm not going to go home and and be in the comfort of my home and with my wife and no one else has that that opportunity and privilege and so he slept with the other man David being kind of, you know surprised by that he tried to but getting drunk and Bradley
know, you know and so again that speaks to character and integrity and we're thankful that that account is here. but even with that David is you know thinking he's he's got to take matters into his own hands. Now you remember that when we talked about the He even Nations and what made them great was, you know the conquest the power the armies and their wealth, but what made Israel great was God. And so David is no longer relying on God is that he's relying on his own thoughts. Okay, I got to do this. I got to do that. I got it, you know, so he's coming up with his own thoughts and schemes and so he is not and we're going to say something.
Yes, yes.
You know, yes.
Yes, and what is that and he has what's the payment part and pay more than what they say. Yeah. I really like that one. Pastor says that because it's so true it is so true. But you know just for us to to realize when we are studying we are starting to understand. Yes the situation but we've got to make sure that we are applying it to us a man and you know not saying that this one send is every man's weakness not saying that this one sin is the only thing that we care about but we know our own weaknesses. And that's what we're dealing with.
So we're on 14 and it came to pass in the morning that David wrote a letter to joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. So he's carrying, you know, what's going to happen to him to the general. And said that he wrote in the letter saying set you Uriah in the Forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him. Just leaving out there. You know put him out there just Retreat y'all, you know, don't even be a help or support that he may die and Joanne had a problem with that. Thank the Lord.
nevertheless he did put him in a position where it
where he did die. But other people died as well. So do you see how him trying him being David how that you know, not only affected him a Shiba now, he's bringing in the general and now the general because he's got feelings about you know, I can't just leave a man, you know, and then Retreat from him he puts other people in danger. Yes, and they lose their life.
Yeah.
That's right.
bright
Yes.
That's right. That's right. And that's the thing.
And you know and the thing I appreciate is confess, you know, because if you're just trying to cover something up you can't get forgiveness. You can only get forgiveness.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yeah.
I mean, it's just so true. You know people think that I don't know. What's the is something whatever consenting adults or something. That's crazy. It has an impact on people Beyond those two, you know, and so we need to be very careful as we live this life, you know thinking about the impact of not just sexual sins, but just. You know anything that we do that is that is not bring glory to the Lord how it can impact you no lies. They they have an impact, you know, so it's not just sexual sins yet.
everything
so, you know, we have the Holy Ghost that helps us and so we we asked the Lord to search and so as we are living a life to please the Lord if we have a weakness if we have send those are things that we do need to confess and the reason of confession is it helps us to be accountable because if you confess To someone because some people are just of the I'm not going to do it. You're not going to confess to my cell. It's sometimes pride pride that they don't want someone else to know but it is a point of accountability because then your confession to someone who is in a a leadership or a stronger position that can help that can mentor you that can pray for you that can you know, just check in with you someone we are here to help each other not to have something over someone but that's why you have leadership and it may be that you go to the pasture with the pastor may ask you to to to have someone else that you like, you know, like if it were there's no difference between men and women, but sometimes there's a sensitivity issue and sometimes you know,
Aunt but but you know, but if there is a gross and yes that needs to go to the pastor, but you do but confession because sometimes and we've all done it. I'm not going to do something anymore, you know might be overeating. You know, I'm not going to do that anymore and you find yourself doing it. But when you speak it out when it's someone else is aware that kind of helps to hold you accountable not a judge, but if you are seriously wanting to move beyond that that confession and that person can be a support and a help.
members here
amen And the thing is is that Israel was a nation Old Testament. We New Testament are individuals. We want to make the Lord the king of our lives and so letting him be king of Our Lives then we submit to the guidelines that he has for those that are in his kingdom a man. So it's not I don't become my own. So nowadays we talked about the men being Kings and you know, the So we're not our own Gods. And kings and queens, we're not he's the king and so, you know that we have to understand our position in the kingdom and that's what this is all about. This is this is keys to the kingdom.
All right.
So we have other people dying and 16 and it came to pass he observed and he put Uriah in the position along with the other man that they were slain in combat. 18 then show up sent and told David all things concerning the war. And we know that you know David had kind of a a light.
No, that's what I just said. I thought did I and the men of the city without fault with joab and there fell some of the people in the service of David and Uriah the hittite also died. And so
that's what we were talking about. Is that Uriah died, but other people died because he was put in a position and in war you you know who to send in you know that the front of the line is going to be. That's not where you put your best people and you know the fair scuse me. yeah, yeah, and so he was just put in a bad position cuz those are usually the ones who are going to get you know, and so
there were just He was not destined to come out but then it says and other people and when David got word he was you know, just like those are the you know, that's what happens in war people died. But it wasn't you usually don't put your best people up front and so it wasn't. a normal occurrence And so we are in 26 and when the wife of Uriah her that Uriah her husband was dead. She mourned for her husband and when the morning was passed Davidson and fetched her to his house and she became his wife and he bear and bear him a son but the things that David had done just pleased the Lord. so we already looked at Leviticus 20 and 10 and it talked about what was the punishment for adultery?
Both of them should know by now. Let's look at Exodus 21 + 12.
So They seized I surely put to death. So, what did he do? Yes, so we have two lessons is right. I mean sins that. That they have death sentences and it said and Sister Williams said what you're saying is going to find you out to can't cover it up. So he's thinking what? Okay, the man's wife is gone. I'm married. She's my wife now, but what is it say, what's that last sentence of 27 say It displeased the Lord. So this is his scheme and this isn't the Lord, right? So we want to make sure that our plans are lining up with God's Will and not we're trying to make a scheme and cover up. So the other people won't know. You know cuz that's basically what it is at this point. You know, I'm okay. The time of mourning is over. I'm going to marry you you're going to you know, this baby is going to be my baby. But the Bible said it was okay if you look down at 5:45, you're right as wife bear day for the child. So that's the truth of it, you know when she conceived she was uriah's wife. So it said, you know this this whole thing this please the Lord because nothing has been pulled over, you know on the Lord cuz he still knew this was uriah's wife that bear David a son and this thing displeased the Lord
and they did that.
So the thing is is that our sin has consequences. So let's look at 12:13 and David said Nathan, we know that Nathan was the prophet and he told the parable and we also know that when the king speaks something what the king speaks has to come to pass, right? And what did he say about the man in the parable but Nathan? So what that's right. We got we got the Commandments. We got about committing adultery. We got murder and now I'm speaking out of the king's mouth. King said that man should die and then Nathan said what you the man you and David was like right and so now we come to 13 and David said unto Nathan. I have sinned against the Lord. There we go. That's the confession. and it has to be that it was genuine.
Because we see that he didn't die, right? but we know punishment for those things and we have them identified, right? We have it by God and by man. He was the king. What decree comes out of his mouth is law? And then we know the Ten Commandments is law.
And so when he said I had sent that that's it. That's how you confess. What did you do? My children are young. I was like, I'm sorry now, that's not good enough. I'm sorry for what? What did you do? And what are you going to not do and what are you going to do about it? How you going to make it right, you know? but he said I said not put which seemed like it might have wanted. you know, it seems like our Sunday School curriculum, they might What kind of fish are in that but no, David said I sent you know not well as she hadn't been up there. You know. But take that ownership.
It's the only way that we can be. Forgiving is if we confess. Now there will always be consequences.
But when we're talking about our soul. I want to be safe.
And that confession and the consequence might be able to help someone out. you know when they see the you know the reality and the truth of walking this way that you can be forgiven and that You know the consequence and the rules the guidelines that the Lord has said is so that we will be able to live a better life, you know, not that we would have a a life of you. No turmoil, or that we were so oppressed. And you know people think old will you can't do this? You can't do that. Once you are saved those are things that you don't want to do. So it's not that you can't do them. And so because the world has the mind of the world they don't understand but when we are walking in our freedom and liberty and loving it That is a testimony as to who God is who he is in our lives and who he can be in the lives of others. That's that's why we're say we're safe for us. But we're saying that others might be safe. And so we want to make sure that that testimony is able to live in us and even if we send as Saints confess because short of that we're going to the lake like every other Center. But the Lord has made a way for us to escape and that is through confession. So David said I have sinned against the Lord The Who The Covenant keeping Lord? You see what that says capital L capital O capital r capital D. So he understands fully going back to the Ten Commandments. He understands all about murder for adultery about well. Your life being that the cost for adultery and your life being the cost for murder. All right. Let's go to Proverbs 28 + 13. This almost feels like Bible study.
Proverbs 28. We're just taking a peruse.
Yes.
He that what? What's that word cover it? When you try to yeah, okay, go ahead. I thought you said covet go ahead.
And that's what David received wasn't it? Because that is what the punishment was for those. for that act do for the act of adultery the act of murder and then when the king spoke and it became law and death was the sentence he received what Mercy
And that's that's what we we hope for is Mercy, but it can't happen unless you what confess.
Hey man, it's so Nathan said unto David the Lord also have put away by send Val shall not die. So there's the mercy. so we can't cover send we have to confess it how be it because By this deed, the adulterous act that has given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme the child. Also that is born unto these two shall surely die and Nathan departed unto his house in the Lord's struck the child that uriah's wife bear unto David and it was very sick.
Alright, let's look at our question. Yes.
All right, number 12. What are we alerted at the beginning of this account?
That's right. That's right. again We know ourselves that was that was his weakness, right?
What were b'shevat family connections?
I think it said in here and told more than I knew. Yeah, but that her that her father was a soldier and Yeah, it did but we do know that it said that she was the daughter of Elam and then we find that he was a soldier and then you know, it didn't say about the grandfather but this just gives additional information and then we also know according to what the scripture said is that he was the wife of Uriah the hittite so he had information to go on and then it says what kind of soldier was Uriah.
yes, he was he was loyal and
He was at a hittite which a lot of times we see them as being.
In opposition. Yeah, and so the fact that he was loyal and in David's Army that speaks a lot, you know as to who he is because he's been converted, you know when he's going to now fight with Israel.
Against The Other Nation
Yeah, but there's a hitch height. You know all those sites that we read about in the you know, who are are usually the enemy that he's faithful loyal and in David's Army. Fighting battles for Israel, you know and those battles are to really bring judgment on those other nations that serve all of those other guys, but he's in the Lord's army fighting. And is Elder said more committed than David? Who was the king?
How had David situation predispose him to commit adultery?
Yeah, I mean we got it, you know, yes, there's an outline but we got to go deep and understand you know what there is to to pull out. So yeah, he should have been with this troops. Said that if you read verse we started verse too, but if you read verse one that they had a year, right?
How much more vacation do you need? You know what we celebrating we get a week two weeks.
Yes.
Yes, it did. Yes.
That's tragic. tragic part yeah, yeah.
So, you know. It's those those things that are connected to us.
They can have a tremendous impact did David try to keep his paternity of a Chivas child unknown.
Excuse me.
Yeah, and and and you know, just just give him a what's it called?
Yeah, absolutely. And then David said well, let me go get him drunk. You know, I know if he's drunk his resistance to be low.
So, you know that was again he is fully being the soldier. And the army that he is committed to Velour. And we see David less so.
What did Uriah carry back to the battle with back to the battle with him? His own lessons and then something. Why did joab obey David's order without question?
Because he was the king but he did. Put a little yeah. Yeah, so, you know that without question but yes, he did make it so that David would die in battle, but that send him out there and don't let anybody that was no he couldn't go that far.
Why did David marry Bathsheba so hastily? Yes. Yes, yes. But let the Lord was still this please Lord knew. How did David react when faced with his guilt? He repented repentance and confession. That's the only way that you will be able to be forgiven and obtain Mercy. What were the results of Davidson?
the baby died
Uriah died other men in the Army died.
Yes, he did. When we think about Solomon and his greater family all the other children that he had with his other wives and concubines. Remember we talked about rape murder Rebellion. All of that is sin that is the result of David fan which was weakness for women.
So we thank the Lord and as we look at David, we don't want to say look at David. We want to turn it on and look at ourselves realize our weaknesses. And make sure that we ask the Lord for help. If we need to confess confess, that's the only way to be forgiven that we might obtain Mercy, but there's always a consequence for send a man.
They were United and then I'm in an even generals at because it actually was in in for but yes, you know, it's it's Division and you don't yep. That's what you say. It just perpetuates, you know, just like when we think about
Sarah and Abraham and what's going on in the Middle East? We understand that, you know, of course there was the promise and then there was Ishmael, but there's there's always that You know that rubbing the wrong way the tension the jealousy the you know, the rebellion and it it causes for a split. That's why the Lord says
He couldn't.
Thanks be to God, you know, we we do have our our families but in the New Testament if you know every man seeking the Lord for himself, and so we we definitely want to repent we do this has been just a wonderful discussion today continue to study because this this is what we want and you know for the closing in attendance and we we love having a higher number. So I'm working at pray out there Lord. We thank you for this.
