John 20:30–31 NASB95
30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
Jesus is the prophesied Masiah.
Jesus is the Son of God
Belief in Jesus is the means of having eternal life.

Deja vu

John 21:1–6 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
Luke Chapter 5. The beginning of Jesus ministry, He was teaching and crowds were gathering so he called to Peter who was a short way off shore and He got in the boat and began teaching the crowd.
Jesus told Peter to let down his nets and Peter complained that they had fished all night, and hadn’t caught anything.
And of course we know what happened.
This would have been one of those stories that they shared, relished, laughed about with one another.
We all have those stories.
The driveway at the house in Lead.
Tombstone at the Motel.
Pavement Ends.
This would have been one of those.
John 21:7 NASB95
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.
Contrast that with Peter’s response in Luke.
Luke 5:8 NASB95
8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
Proverbs 9:10 NASB95
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
But it’s not the end.
Grandkids hurling themselves off the bed.
Complete trust.
What we see here is Peter with a childlike faith in Jesus.
The other disciple come in the boat dragging the nets full of fish.
Jesus already has a fire going and some bread and He tells them to bring some of the fish and feeds them breakfast.
John 21:14 NASB95
14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
John 21:15–17 NASB95
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.
Agape vs. Philao
John uses them interchangeably
Peter grieved.......he thought Jesus was doubting his love.
Paul, like in the boat, was a little slow in understanding.
This is the first intimate interaction between Jesus and Peter since before the crucifixion.
John 13:37–38 NASB95
37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
Peter failed Jesus three times, and Jesus gives Peter three times to profess his love for Jesus.
Jesus in not only offering redemption, but He is telling him that He is still able to use Jesus, in spite of his failings.
