Overview:
At the end of a dark period
Weak Spiritual leadership- Eli and Sons
Coming transition in leadership style
Three main characters: Samuel, Saul, and David
Chapter 1:
Section 1: V. 1-8
Elkananah was a godly man, who sought the spiritual well being of his family. Every year taking them to Shiloh (where the Ark of the Covenant and temple were located during this time period) to worship.
Two wives: Peninnah and Hannah
Hannah likely first wife (seen for his special love for her) was barren
Peninnah was likely married solely to carry on line. This bitterness between her and Hannah can be seen in her consistent berating of Hannah for being childless.
In this culture you were seen as insignificant and cursed if you were unable to have children.
Hannah’s barrenness lead to depression.
Section 2: V. 9-19
Hannah went to the temple to pray promising her sin to be a nazirite especially dedicated to the Lord.
Eli mistakes her to be drunk, but after Hannah explains the situation send her with his blessing.
Hannah encouraged returns to life, knowing the Lord will work for her good.
Section 3: V. 20-28
The Lord opens her womb
Samuel is born and when he is weened (about 3 years old) he is taken to Eli at Shiloh and dedicated to the Lord for his entire life.
Discussion Points:
What did Hannah’s depression cause her to do? How can we model Hannah’s example?
What does the birth of Samuel show us about God’s control over this world?
