Matthew 26:26-30.
ETS: Jesus shared the Passover Meal with the disciples, pointing to the establishment of the New Covenant.
ESS: We live in New Covenant with God because of the blood shed and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
OSS: [Devotional] {I want the hearers to reflect and worship as we remember what Jesus did on our behalf.}
PQ: What important aspects are observed in this Passage?
UW: Aspects
TS: Let us examine these aspects together now:
Jesus revealed to them the difficult, sacrificial death he would die. [v. 26]
Jesus revealed to them the inauguration of the New Covenant sealed by His blood. [vv. 27-28]
Jr. 31:31-34 “31 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 This one will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt—my covenant that they broke even though I am their master”—the Lord’s declaration. 33 “Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put my teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin.”
This is also reminiscent of the language used in Exodus 24:8 “8 Moses took the blood, splattered it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you concerning all these words.””
Notice also the purpose within the shedding of His blood: the remission of sins.
Jesus revealed the glorious, future fellowship banquet when Christians are united in Heaven with Jesus and the Father in the Kingdom. [v. 29]
CONCLUSION:
Thus, as we observe the Lord’s Supper together, we do so in a manner of reflection and remembrance of Jesus’ sacrificial death, looking forward to the reunion we will experience when we are in Heaven with Him. Until then, as often as we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we proclaim His death and anticipate His coming again. [1 Cor. 11:26 “26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” ]
