Notes on Luke 11:45
Questions:
Why are Jesus woe statements and confronting the hypocrisy offensive to the lawyers too?
who were the lawyers? and why are they significant?
vs 48 - How are the lawyers guilty of what he accuses them of - approving of their fathers deeds in killing the prophets? you build their tombs?
vs 50 - what does Jesus mean when he says “charged against this generation?”
vs 51 - How are The prophets of old are also on them?
Notes and observations:
Jesus addresses the lawyers in addition to the pharisees
Woe #1 - you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear while you will not even touch the burdens with one finger
woe #2 - you build the tombs of the prophets and it was your fathers who killed them.
vs 48 interpretation and ascribed motive: “Therefore you are witnesses and approve of their deeds -
vs 49 - God sent prophets who their descendents Killed and who they themselves will persecute.
vs 50 & 51 - your guilty of these crimes. Their blood and their mistreatment is on your head.
vs 51 - The prophets of old are also on you. - ???
Woe #3 vs 52 - For you have taken away the Key of Knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hinder those who were entering.”
Jesus Makes some enemies by calling out their sin
After Jesus Calls out three woes to the lawyers and scribes and pharisees they became very hostile.
Why? because when sin is legitimately confronted with truth HOSTILITY, PLOTTING AND ANIMOSITY EMERGE. they could have repented and turned from sin but they further hardened their hearts.
