PRAYER
CONTEXT
Preface that this is entirely about Israel, while the Church of Christ has received this new life in no way is this chapter in reference to it. This prophecy is entirely about Israel
Jeremiah 8 seems to be a reasonable setting to our text - the people of Israel are apart and without hope
Ezekiel is a priest - unique that God guided him through an area considered ceremonially unclean Leviticus 21:11“nor shall he approach any dead person nor defile himself even for his father or his mother;”
SERMON
I. Will Dead Men Live? (v1-6)
Ezekiel 37 | 1 The hand of Yahweh was upon me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of Yahweh and caused me to rest in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones. 2 He caused me to pass among them all around, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley; and behold, they were very dry. 3 He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord Yahweh, You know.” 4 Then He said to me, “Prophesy over these bones and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of Yahweh.’ 5 “Thus says Lord Yahweh to these bones, ‘Behold, I will cause breath to enter you that you may come to life. 6 ‘I will put sinews on you, make flesh come up upon you, cover you with skin, and put breath in you that you may come alive; and you will know that I am Yahweh.’”
Paraphrase
Notes
The purpose of verses 1-6 seems to be found in the last clause of Ezekiel 37.6, “You will know that I am Yahweh”
Questions
v1 What Valley is this? Is there some kind of battle that has taken place - it is an army
v2 How long have they been there - they are very dry
v3 Is there a principle to be found in Ezekiel’s response to the Lord - O Lord Yahweh, You know
v4 Can dead men hear? Can dead men hear the Word of Yahweh/The Sword of the Spirit
v5 Is the breath the Spirit and is the Spirit effected via the New Covenant?
Cross References
Acts 8:39“When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing.”
Genesis 2:7 “Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.”
Deuteronomy 32:39“‘See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded, and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.”
Isaiah 26:19“Your dead will live; Their corpses will rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and shout for joy, For your dew is as the dew of the dawn, And the earth will give birth to the departed spirits.”
Jeremiah 7:32–8:2 | 32 “Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when it will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place. 33 “The dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away. 34 “Then I will make to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land will become a waste place. 1 “At that time,” declares Yahweh, “they will bring out the bones of the kings of Judah and the bones of its princes, and the bones of the priests and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem from their graves. 2 “And they will spread them out to the sun, the moon, and to all the host of heaven, which they have loved and which they have served, and which they have walked after and which they have sought, and which they have worshiped. They will not be gathered or buried; they will be as dung on the face of the ground.
Ezekiel 3:12“Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me, “Blessed be the glory of Yahweh in His place.””
Observations:
Ezekiel is aware of God’s sovereignty in the giving of life - how come we do not? We get so frustrated when spiritually dead men act like spiritually dead men and we shouldn’t. Regeneration, Resurrection is a business for God

II. Only By the Power of God (v7-10)
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold, a rumbling; and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 And I looked, and behold, sinews were on them, and flesh came up upon them, and skin covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9 Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these who were killed, that they may come to life.”’” 10 So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they came to life and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great military force.

Notes
v7 The action takes place as Ezekiel is preaching - in a hurry to obey
v9 the Breath is the Spirit and the word for breath and wind and Spirit is the same Ruach
How very powerful is the spoken word of God!!!!??!?!?!?
Romans 10:13–15“for “WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? And how will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!””
Questions
v7 How do the bones know where to go?
v8 Is the breath the Spirit?
v10 Who is this army? v11 answers that this is the Whole House of Israel -
Cross References
Isaiah 66:14“Then you will see this, and your heart will be joyful, And your bones will flourish like the new grass; And the hand of Yahweh will be made known to His slaves, But He will be indignant toward His enemies.”
Ezekiel 39:29““And I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,” declares Lord Yahweh.”

Revelation 7:1“After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree.”
Observations:
No bones were misplaced or missing, skulls connected to vertebrae and legs to hips and knees and feet nothing is left undone

III. I, Yahweh, Have Spoken and Done It (v11-14)
11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished. We are completely cut off.’ 12 “Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, My people; and I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 “Then you will know that I am Yahweh, when I have opened your graves and caused you to come up out of your graves, My people. 14 “And I will put My Spirit within you, and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken and done it,” declares Yahweh.’”

Notes
Seems like there is a gap between verse 13 and verse 14
TSK states that the fulfillment of the Spirit indwelling was the obedience of the nation of Israel in coming out of Babylon - what of Come out of her My people?
Shares incredible similarities to Genesis 2 in the following
Divine intervention - dead men don’t do anything
Genesis 2:7“Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.”
Giving of the Spirit/breath
Genesis 2:7“Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.”
Deposit within a place of blessing
Genesis 2:8“And Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.”
Covenant (Covenant of life/New Covenant)
Ezekiel 11:19““And I will give them one heart and give within them a new spirit. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,”
Jeremiah 31:31–34““Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, but I was a husband to them,” declares Yahweh. “But this is the covenant which I will cut with the house of Israel after those days,” declares Yahweh: “I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. “And they will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares Yahweh, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.””
Ezekiel 36:26““Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
Proximity? Where in Ek 37 is proximity or relationship emphasized
Ezekiel 37:26–28““And I will cut a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will give them the land and multiply them and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever. “My dwelling place also will be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people. “And the nations will know that I am Yahweh who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever.”’””
Questions
v13/14 Is this statement between the receiving of the flesh and the receiving of the breath - there seems to be an artificial break superimposed upon the text, why?
v12 Are the graves referenced here those in exile? Is it upon re consolidating into the promised land that new life is given?
CHIP agrees, compared to Ek 32 which is directed to Egypt the grave suggests finality not a temporary place, this is not an individuals location but that of nations
There seems to be nuance between Israel and Others whereas Israel will be raised from the grave the nations will not - instead they will be judged (Daniel 12:2–3““And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach and everlasting contempt. “And those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” )

And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.”
Observations:
v13 the point seems to be that they will know Yahweh - matches to verse 6
v14 says that the Spirit is the Breath

FULFILLMENT OF COVENANT PROMISES TO ABRAHAM Jeremiah 31:31–34““Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, but I was a husband to them,” declares Yahweh.
RELATIONSHIP EMPHASIZED Ezekiel 36:22–36 | 22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations, to which you have come. 23 “I will prove the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh,” declares Lord Yahweh, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight. 24 “And I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands, and bring you into your own land. 25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your uncleanness and from all your idols. 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to do My judgments. 28 “And you will inhabit the land that I gave to your fathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God. 29 “Moreover, I will save you from all your uncleanness; and I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I will not bring a famine on you. 30 “I will multiply the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field so that you will not receive again the reproach of famine among the nations. 31 “Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves to your own faces for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 “I am not doing this for your sake,” declares Lord Yahweh, “let it be known to you. Be ashamed and feel dishonor for your ways, O house of Israel!” 33 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places will be rebuilt. 34 “The desolate land will be cultivated instead of being a desolation in the sight of everyone who passes by. 35 “And they will say, ‘This desolate land has become like the garden of Eden; and the waste, desolate, and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.’ 36 “Then the nations that remain all around you will know that I, Yahweh, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted that which was desolate; I, Yahweh, have spoken and will do it.”
Ezekiel 11:19““And I will give them one heart and give within them a new spirit. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,”
Isaiah 49:8“Thus says Yahweh, “In an acceptable time I have answered You, And in a day of salvation I have helped You; And I will guard You and give You for a covenant of the people, To establish the land, to make them inherit the desolate inheritance;”
Jeremiah 32:40““And I will cut an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.”
John 6:63–65““The Spirit is the One who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. “But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.””
The Church is not Israel
OBSERVATION: You need to know this - We who are receiving the blessing of the Spirit are:
Uncondemned (Romans 8:1“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”)
Free from the law of sin and death Romans 8:2“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”
Able now to set our minds on the things of God Romans 8:5“For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”
Our mind’s are able to be set upon the Spirit and enjoy life and peace Romans 8:6“For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,”
We are able to turn from hostility toward God and submit to His Law Romans 8:7“because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God, for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,”
We are able to please God Romans 8:8“and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God.”
We now belong to God because we are in the Spirit Romans 8:9“However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.”
Our spirit is alive because we have the Spirit of Christ and have been united with Christ’s righteousness Romans 8:10“But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.”
You have the promise of resurrection because Christ was raised Romans 8:11“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
We are under obligation to the Spirit, not the flesh Romans 8:12“So then, brothers, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—”
We are to live according to the Spirit - this means actively putting to death the former practices of sinfulness Romans 8:13“for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die, but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the practices of the body, you will live.”
We are able to be led by God’s Spirit, we can prove that we are sons of God by doing so Romans 8:14“For as many as are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
We are free from slavery, free from fear, we have been adopted, we can call God our Father Romans 8:15 “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry out, “Abba! Father!””
We can agree with the Spirit that we are children of God Romans 8:16“The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,”
We can understand our inheritance, we must suffer as Christ suffered to receive the glory that we will share with Him Romans 8:17“and if children, also heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.”
WARNING
APPLICATION: What does the Spirit Led Life look like
John 14:26““But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”
Galatians 5:22–26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in step with the Spirit. Let us not become those with vain glory, challenging one another, envying one another.”
Luke 11:13““If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?””
Isaiah 11:1–5“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of Yahweh will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh. And He will delight in the fear of Yahweh, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor render a decision by what His ears hear; But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with uprightness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will put the wicked to death. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.”
CONCLUSION
Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:42–49“So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a corruptible body, it is raised an incorruptible body; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So also it is written, “The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven. As is the earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, so also are those who are heavenly. And just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly.”
Sovereignty/Inability
Ephesians 2:1–10 | 1 And you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom we all also formerly conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Spirit empowered life
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the righteous requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God, for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God. 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 So then, brothers, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die, but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the practices of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, also heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
