Do not Steal
Do not Steal
So far we have looked at 7 commandments.
In Matthew 22:37-39
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
What are the commandments that we have looked at?
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
and today, we are going to look at our next commandment
“You shall not steal.
Today I want to talk about one of the prophets who was also a priest. His name is Ezekiel.
Ezekiel was one of the people from Israel that were taken into Babylon as slaves. The happened about 2600 years ago.
That’s a long time ago.
Maybe you know of some others in the Bible that were taken into slavery or even those who were born in Babylon as slaves.
Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Nehemiah, and Ezra.
This was a terrible time. Their nation, country was destroyed. Jerusalem was ransacked and burned.
God had a message that He wanted His people to hear.
This is what He said,
The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.
What do you think that means?
There was a time when if one person in the family did something wrong, the whole family had to pay for it.
It reminds me of a story in the book of Joshua 7.
There was a man named Achan that was part of Israel, from the tribe of Judah. That means that he was a descendant of Judah, Jacob’s son.
When God destroyed the city of Jericho, the people were not to take anything, but Achan saw some things he liked and hid them in his tent.
God had the people come in front of Joshua until Achan was chosen.
This is what Joshua said,
Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done:
When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath.
Because of what he had done everything that he had was taken and destroyed. He and his sons and daughters were killed by stoning, and everything he had was burned.
In Ezekiel, God informed the people that He wasn’t going to hold somebody else’s sin against them.
Which do you think is more fair? That everyone is punished or just the person who did it?
I want to play a game with you,
“True or False”
We have to decide if what you are saying is true or false. When you answer, you can decide which way you are going to answer.

The eighth commandment is
“You shall not steal.
If a person steals, they must stop or suffer the punishment.
Sometimes we might think that nobody will ever know, regardless, God sees everything.
“But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die.
God wants each of us to go to Heaven, to have eternal life
When a person comes to faith in Jesus Christ, we will be forgiven.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Our old habits need to change. We need to obey God’s commandments.
What happens is that God gives us a new heart.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Let’s pray!
