Lessons from the first Miracle

John 2:1–11 NIV
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
6 basins of water. Tonight, we are going to carry three.
It’s not a party until the water turns to wine.
120 gallons. A gallon weighs about 8 pounds, so if you multiply 120 gallons by 8 you get about 960 pounds. If you divide that by 6 basins, each basin weighs about 160 pounds. So, they weren’t light. They were difficult to carry.
When we carry these three basins tonight, there is going to be moments when they get heavy. But keep carrying the water until it turns to wine. Because, it’s not a party until it turns to wine. We can’ t celebrate until it turns to wine.
Basin # 1 worship
Worship is the life that we live.
Colossians 3:1–3 NIV
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Heart = our passions
Mind= our focus
Spirit = our life
Worship encompasses everything that we are. This basin, must be carried if we are to live a life on purpose.
In other words, worship is more than just the words we sing. It’s the life that we live.
This basin is easier to carry when the music is what we like.
When things are going well.
but, do you worship him in the storms of life?
That’s when the basin gets heavy.
2. Basin #2 fellowship
This basin is essential for fulfilling the second greatest commandment.
Loving our neighbors as ourself.
Acts 2:42–47 NIV
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Something that most of you remember, “We might not be the smartest or the most talented at the table , but we can be the biggest encourager at the table.”
Let’s be a people that rejoice with those who rejoice and a people that weeps with those who weep.
The second one tends to be easier for us.
- Bama, and not starting.
Celebrate wins. Rejoice with those who rejoice.
3. Basin #3 servanthood
This basin will define who we are for the rest of our lives. Are we willing to serve others?
To have the mindset of others are greater than me, mentality.
Jesus before he went to the cross.
John 13:1–17 NIV
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Football this past week.
The unique thing about these heavy basins, is that we don’t have ton carry them alone.
Matthew 11:28–30 NIV
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
When worship is difficult. He is there.
When fellowship doesn’t seem like the easy thing to do, He is with you.
When serving seems below you, then remember the King of Kings and Lord of Lords washed feet.
