Dual Fulfillment

A prophecy is made, and the first fulfillment of the prophecy comes to pass relatively soon thereafter. Later, there is a second fulfillment to the prophecy, and that second fulfillment is usually fuller and more literal.

Daniel 9:2 NASB95

in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.

Daniel is studying what we would call the book of Jeremiah, and saw the word given to him that after 70 years he would allow God’s people to return from their captivity in Babylon

“For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.

so cool that we can read what he read!

Daniel 9:3 NASB95

So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes.

He prays according to God’s will

how can I know God’s will? Start by reading (better word is studying) the word

So I gave my attention (set my face)

This is determined prayer

fasting, sackcloth and ashes (clothes of mourning)

Prayer is in verses 4-19

Gave God praise - Awesome God, Faithful God

Confessed sins of his people

we have sinned, we have been wicked

no excuses

He took the whole word from Jeremiah in CONTEXT, not just “Hallelujah, we return after 70 years”

Now while I was speaking and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God in behalf of the holy mountain of my God,

Three parts of his prayer

speaking God’s word in his prayer

confessing my sin

confessing sin of his people

asking for help (holy mountain - Jerusalem)

When was the last time we confess the sins of our people (race, country, family)?

Why confess the sins of others?

shows true disagreement with sin

shows priority of your relationship to God over your relationship to your people

shows humility - pride is preventing people of America from talking about slavery

shows desire to not repeat those sins

consciously breaking the pattern - not just, “we don’t do that anymore”

while I was still speaking in prayer, then the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision previously, came to me in my extreme weariness about the time of the evening offering.

Angel Gabriel was sent with a message to Daniel

He gave me instruction and talked with me and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you insight with understanding.

part of the answer to prayer is understanding

Daniel 9:23 NASB95

“At the beginning of your supplications the command was issued, and I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed; so give heed to the message and gain understanding of the vision.

prayer from a man on earth moved heaven

Daniel was highly esteemed, so God wanted him to have understanding - the closer you are to God the more understanding you have (vice-versa)

“No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

Daniel 9:24 NASB95

“Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.

based on Hebrew language, that way weeks is used, “weeks” means a set of seven years

so we have seventy sevens = seven years, seventy times

70 X 7years = 490 years

“A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

this sounds way bigger than what Daniel was thinking and praying about

Big picture is all of these things will be completed in this 490 years

Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times.

start at the end: This clock will start ticking when the order is given to rebuild Jerusalem (Daniel’s Prayer)

70 x 7 years = 490 years

now let’s break down these 70

seven plus sixty two = 69

69 x 7 years = 483 years

something will happen 483 years after the order to rebuild Jerusalem is given

the Christ will show up

Artaxerxes made a decree giving Nehemiah permission, safe passage and supplies to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the walls in 445 B.C. (Nehemiah 2:1-8).

Man named Sir Robert Anderson’s used a 360-day year (which Israel used in Daniel’s day), calculated 173,880 days from the decree to the triumphal entry, fulfilling the prophecy to the day!

Why did the angel break 69 down into 7 + 62? Why not just say 69?

lets look at the seven in 7 + 62

7 x 7 years = 49 years

something important will happen in the first 49 years . . . turns out that the rebuilding of Jerusalem is completed in 49 years

So angel is saying

49 years for the city to be completely rebuilt

434 more years after the city is rebuilt, the Christ will show up (still 483 years)

49 years + 434 years = 483 years

69 x 7 years = 483 years

Daniel 9:26 NLT

“After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.

order given to re-build Jerusalem

49 years will pass for rebuilt to be complete

434 more years for Christ to show up and be killed

then an army will come and destroy the city and the temple (all that has been rebuilt will be destroyed)

Jesus predicted this too “not one stone will be left on top of another”

Romans came and destroyed the city in 70AD because Jewish people rebelled

war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end. Jerusalem has pretty much always at war to this day.(like now)

so we have covered 69 of the 70 sets of 7 (483), but what about the last set of 7 (7 years)?

there seems to be a break and we are waiting for the last set of seven to begin

now time to talk about the last “week”; the last set of seven years

Daniel 9:27 NLT

The ruler will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him.”

A ruler will make a seven year peace treaty with Israel, but will break it, and desecrate the temple (as we already talked about)

but this ruler will be destroyed

Revelation talks about some things happening in 3 1/2 years (half this time)

Matthew 24:15 NLT

“The day is coming when you will see what Daniel the prophet spoke about—the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing in the Holy Place.” (Reader, pay attention!)

Lessons

pray according to the word/will of God (in context)

get close to God to get a better understanding (even more than what you ask for)

you have an important role, but the plan is bigger than you

even the answers to your prayer is bigger than you

that means that God is very interested in you succeeding!
