Introduction

The first major event of the Old Testament was the foundation of the world. In 6 literal days God created everything from nothing and on the seventh day he set up a day of rest. When the world was completed God saw that it was very good!
The Second Major event of the Old Testament is the fall of all mankind in Adam. Satan came as a serpent into the Garden and convinced Eve to doubt the goodness of God. As she doubted the goodness of God she ate of the forbidden fruit and convinced Adam to eat of it as well. Immediately their eyes were opened and they knew the difference between good and evil, before they ate of that fruit they didn’t even know what evil was. After they ate of the fruit they hid from God because of their shame, while they recieved punishment God also extended grace to them by offering a lamb to cover them, picturing the lamb that would be slain for the world, His son Jesus Christ. After this they get kicked out of the Garden and start having kids.
Cain and Abel both different offered sacrifices to God but only one was accepted and that was Abel’s who offered an acceptable sacrifice. God gave cain another chance to make the right sacrifice but instead cain chose to let his anger at God bring him to murder Abel. Cain rejected the goodness of God. Satan thought he had destroyed the bloodline that would eventually bring forth the Saviour, but God knows everything and He had a different plan.
At the end of Chapter 4 we read that Adam and Eve had another son and his name was Seth. They named him this because God had appointed them another seed instead of Abel. The last verse of chapter 4 is the first time that prayer is mentioned in the Bible. Eve questioned the goodness of God, Cain rejected the goodness of God, and Seth rejoiced in the goodness of God.
As we move on to the third major event of the Old Testament we see the flood of the whole earth.
Tonight I want us to look at the state of the world, the introduction to Noah and the judgement coming to the earth.

The State of the world vs. 1-7

The population was continuing to increase as men and women were living hundreds of years as they did before the flood. vs. 1
Between Adam and the flood there were 1,656 years showing that the population could have been in the trillions before the flood.
There is a lot of discussion around verse 2 and it meaning, it is likely that the woman were being possessed by demons and they were taken by ungodly men and filling the earth. vs. 2
Henry Morris said this “Satan perhaps hoping thereby to generate a vast army of human recruits to his rebellion and also to thwart the coming of God’s promised seed thus corrupting all flesh”
Remember since the beginning of sin and the promise of a saviour, Satan has been attacking the bloodline.
God saw the evil and prophesied that his spirit wouldn’t always strive with man. vs. 3
God told them that mans days remaining were 120 years.
God is longsuffering with respect to mans rebellion, but only for a time: the hour of judgement must eventually arrive.
There were giants in the earth vs. 4
Numbers 13:33 “And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
The spiritual condition of the people vs. 5
the wickedness of men was great in the earth
every imagination (purpose or desire) of mans heart was only evil continually
This is the first time the heart is mentioned in the bible connecting the evil in mens heart with grief in Gods heart.
The response of God vs. 6-7
It repented the Lord that he made man
God’s attitude toward man is conditioned by man’s attitude toward Him.
Repent is a change of mind or direction, since God cannot change, the change happens when man changes his mind toward God.
God’s promise to destroy the earth
he would destroy man
beast
creeping things
the fowl of the air

Introduction to Noah vs. 8-10

But- God had just told the world that they would be destroyed, but he would spare one family.
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
Grace- God riches at Christ’s expense
Grace- God’s unmerited favor even unto enablement
Why did Noah find grace when no one else did?
Noah was a Just man
Just - In a moral sense, upright; honest; having principles of rectitude; or conforming exactly to the laws, and to principles of rectitude in social conduct
Noah was perfect in his generation
Perfect- Complete in moral excellencies
Noah walked with God
Noah spent time with God
In a world that does only evil continually we should strive to be like Noah.
Hebrews 11:6–7 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”
When people look at us do they see a difference in the way you live?
How do we live upright while the world around us is going crazy?
We have a good testimony everyday of the week, not just on Sundays.
We walk with God
The best way to act like the saviour is to spend time with the saviour.
Growing up I always heard the saying “you become who you hang around” I believe that is true and the more time you spend with Christ, the more Christ-like you become!
Noah’s sons are born
Shem
Ham
Japeth

The judgement coming to the earth vs. 11-13

The earth was corrupt
Not only were the people corrupted by sin, the earth was also corrupted by sin.
It was corrupted by mankind
The earth was full of violence
The end of all flesh outside of Noah and his family was coming
God was going to destroy man with the earth

Conclusion

We see two sides of the world here in the first part of Genesis 6. We see a corrupt world that does only evil continually versus Noah, a just man, perfect in his generation who walked with God.
While the world is going crazy be a Noah.
