We left off last week with the end of Daniel chapter two verses 48-49 and they said “ 49 Daniel made a request of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon. But Daniel remained at the king’s court.
So these three had been sent out to work in the Babylonian kingdom.
Daniel, if you recall, had interpreted the dream of the king and not only interpreted it, he also told him the dream as God had shown it to Daniel.
This was an amazing feat, and the other “wise men” as I called them, said that only the gods could know such things, when the King had asked them to interpret his dream and furthermore tell him what the dream was about.
Well after seeking God Daniel was able to do the unthinkable! He told the king his dream and its interpretation.
And he gave the glory to God!
This week, and we will be looking into the third chapter of Daniel.
This chapter starts out with the king building a huge statue of gold.
Look at this section with me

THE FIRST THING WE FIND IS THE KINGS EDICT!

3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its breadth six cubits. He set it up on the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2 Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent to gather the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 3 Then the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 And the herald proclaimed aloud, “You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace.” 7 Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, all the peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

If you remember the interpretation of the statue in the dream in Chapter 2, Daniel said that King Nebuchadnezzar was the golden head. Well, it appears that over time the thought of his kingdom being overthrown by another did not set well with him. So we find him showing his BIG head in a Big way in the form of a HUGE statue. And if you notice, this statue is made entirely of gold. No other kingdoms represented! And to top it off, he decides all in the province need to bow down and worship it!
WOW!
Everyone is to bow down to this idol I have built!
Well if you remember Back in Exodus 34:13-17 the Lord was very clear on how he felt about this:
Exodus 34:13–17 ESV
You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their Asherim (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they whore after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and you are invited, you eat of his sacrifice, and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters whore after their gods and make your sons whore after their gods. “You shall not make for yourself any gods of cast metal.
This is something God takes very serious!

second we see Boldness in troubling times!

So this was a law that would apply to our friends Shadrach, Meschach and Abed-nego as well. So how did they respond, knowing full well that this would go against God’s commands for their people?

8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews. 9 They declared to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree, that every man who hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image. 11 And whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

Isn't it sad when people get in trouble for doing the right thing?
Here we have some jews minding their own business and ignoring the kings edict and someone has to point them out.
Well more than just that they were ignoring the king they were standing firm in their faith in God!

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good

This guy was angry!

But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace

THE THIRD THING I WANT TO POINT OUT IS Their response to the king is one of the most inspiring verses in the Bible.

17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18

18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

If God delivers us, or if he does not and WE DIE, no matter the outcome, WE WILL NOT disobey our God!!!!!
We will not!
What courage.
What boldness.
what faith.
they boldly stand in God’s mercy, trusting in Him in front of the one who is going to destroy their lives!
Proverbs 28:1
28 The wicked flee when no one pursues,
but the righteous are bold as a lion
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Pr 28.
These three are lions standing boldly
We forget sometimes that our body can be killed, and we are not to fear this, because our soul is everlasting and in God’s hands. Matthew 10:28
English Standard Version (Chapter 10)
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
We are not to fear man!
If we are trusting in our salvation in Christ Jesus we can have this type of boldness that in troubling times we are able to face them without fear because we have confidence in God!
Lets take a look at what happened to these tree!

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he ordered some of the mighty men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their cloaks, their tunics, their hats, and their other garments, and they were thrown into the burning fiery furnace. 22 Because the king’s order was urgent and the furnace overheated, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bound into the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” 25 He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

THERE WAS A FOURTH MAN IN THE FIRE WITH THEM! God stood with them in their time of trial!
And what is amazing, is that Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego saw that this was going to go one of two ways, but either way they would stand firm. But God had a THIRD way! He would not deliver them from being thrown into the furnace, NOR would he allow them to die in the furnace, he would protect them IN the furnace.
As we look at our lives and the trials that are sometimes placed before us, we are given a choice of how to respond, and it is important for us to remember that God can make a way when there is no way.
Maybe God will deliver you from this situation. Maybe there will be reconciliation to that torn relationship. Maybe there will be deliverance from the struggle that is holding you down. Maybe there will be healing from the illness.
Or maybe, God has a purpose and plan that you do not make it through. Maybe you will carry the hardship bearing witness to his name. Maybe it is your time to die and be with Him. Maybe that struggle is what is needed to help you to grow in faith and character.
And maybe there is a plan C that you can’t even comprehend yet, that will bring glory to His name through you!
Isaiah 55:8 ESV
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
We must truly trust the Lord that if we obey Him, if we follow as He has commanded and led us through His word, that He will be faithful through the trial.

THE FOURTH THING I WANT TO POINT OUT ISOur actions are our witness!

When we stand firm in our faith others will see God through us! Our responses to troubles in our lives are our witnesses.
See how the faithfulness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego impact the king.
Daniel 3:28–30 ESV
Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.
It is obvious by the “tearing limb from limb” part that Nebuchadnezzar still didn’t totally get it, but it made an impact. He was able to see how great their God was. He could not deny it, but that would have never happened if they had bowed down to that idol, if they had valued their own lives more than their faith and bowed to the pressure around them.
Hebrews 10:23 ESV
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
