The filling of The Holy Spirit is related to Christian experience , power , and service .
The work of the Holy Spirit at the point of salvation is once and for all, that’s Baptism , regeneration, indwelling, sealing. That’s once and for all . But the filling is on going. It’s a repeated experience.
The filling of the Spirit is me yielding to God. Yielding means I allow God To guide me.
If you desire to yield to God it must be through His word.
The Holy Spirit is the Supreme teacher
26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
As truth becomes known the believer must yield to that truth.
God recently gave me a verse
1 Thessalonians 4:11 “11 Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before.”
And everytime I think about minding someone elses business the Holy Spirit convicts me with this verse.
In some cases the word of God isn’t explicit on what He’s telling the individual believer to do.
For example does the Word of God tell us where to shop?
Does the word of God tell us who to marry?
Does the word of God tell us where to work?
But the Word of God gives us guiding principles to help us navigate and make Spirit Filled decisions.
So even though the word of God doesn’t tell us where to shop . It gives us guiding principles to utilize how we shop. Not to over spend, being good stewards of the resources God has given us.
He gives us guiding principles.
The filling of The Spirit may be defined as
A spiritual state where The Holy Spirit is fulfilling all that He came to do in the heart and life of the individual believer.
It is not a matter of acquiring more of the Spirit , but rather The Spirit acquiring of the individual.
Being filled with The Spirit shouldn’t be an abnormal situation but every believer is commanded to be filled with the Spirit Eph 5:18
Ephesians 5:18 (NLT)
18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,
This verse includes a negative command and a positive one.
The negative is abstain from being drunk on wine.
do not be drunk with wine because it recklessness, debauchery, wildness.
A person thats not able to be corrected reproved or reformed.
Rather then controlling oneself the wine controls him.
We are to surrender control to The Holy Spirit rather then an intoxicating substance.
Essentially and ultimately what this is speaking about is having a lack of control.
Drunk in love Beyonce
But instead the believer controlling himself.
Thats the worlds goals and allot of Christian goals.
Like how can I control myself!
But being filled with The Spirit if God controlling ones self.
We decided to yield to His controlling but nevertheless its His controlling.
The Holy Spirit is the Agent of the filling.
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
Christ is the Content of filling
15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
The Holy Spirit is the Agent that reveals the Content. Which is Christ Person His ways His thoughts etc. etc.
The more we are filled and matured in The Spirit we will increasingly manifest the fruits of The Spirit .
22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
