Signs of Life that the giver of life brings
Expectation
Its marked by a increasing/growing expectation that can only be brought about by God
John Tyson - Church of the city
Became passionate about the remarkable moves of God throughout history
Read books, did interviews, studying revival, traveled around the world to meet with people.
Learned principle “God comes where He is wanted.”
1 Corinthians 14:1 “1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.”
How do we create space to linger. Space to just be present. Space to sit quietly before the Lord. Intentional space created to be present. Are you hungry enough for God to create intentional space to linger in His presence?
Do you come to church, ready, hungry and expectant?
“Spiritual hunger was what moved a few students to linger after chapel February 8th. Hunger rose to starvation as numbers increased. It was as though we had stepped inside the New Testament among the throngs pressing in to gain the help of the Lord.” - David Thomas - articulation of what happened at Asbury - Personal reflection
Growing Revelation
Jeremiah 33:3 “3 Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”
John 15. Spirit will guide us in all truth
1 Corinthians 14. Gift of prophecy - God revealing himself to people for people.
Growing activation
He empowers the natural and the supernatural
Romans 12 - each have been given different gifts to use.
we are too tempted to settle for watching a few all-stars do their thing.
Nameless, Faceless leadership - because so many are involved.
Growing Adoration - Jesus truly being enthroned in worship.
We have been shaped by culture to want to where the crown of adoration. - Burger kings have it your way slogan
John 16:14 “14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
Jesus is the ultimate object of worship.
Growing Consecration - Growing adoration and worship of God brings about broken authentic people who will humbly repent.
Isaiah - natural reaction to a bigger understanding of God - I am doomed
Psalm 24. Whom may ascend the holy hill - those with holy hands.
Glenn Packiam - The Holy Spirit and the Church
If you love the things of the Spirit but not the church there is probably something off in you. Because for 2,000 years the role of the Holy Spirit has been to gather, build, and establish the church, the Family of God.
If you love the things of the church but not the Holy Spirit there is probably something off in you.
Who is the Holy Spirit
Not an element - earth, wind fire
Not a force - gravity or wind
Not a feeling - sometimes an encounter with the feeling can involved our feelings
The Holy Spirit is a person - the third person of the Trinity
The Holy Spirit is the LORD - The giver of life
The father is the creator, The son is the redeemer, and the Spirit is the renewer. The three persons of the trinity are one God. Meaning, we cannot divide the actions of the trinity. We experience the love of God through the Holy Spirit. We know the truth of the kingdom of God because of the Spirits teaching through Jesus.
The Spirit is the giver of life. Giver is ongoing. It’s not something He once did but continues to do. John 3:7–8 “7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.””
The spirit is like breath that makes us born again
The Spirit is like wind that fills us up and pushes us out into the world
Three ways the Spirit gives life to the church
Encounter an upward orientation towards God
Formation is the downward work of God doing a deep work in us
Mission is the lateral movement of God’s work going out through us
The Spirit and Encounter
Ephesians 5:18–21 “18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
Go on being filled - continual
Carry out your fulfillment in these ways
Encounter - ways we encounter the Spirit through Psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, as we give thanks, mutual submitting relationships with one another.
How do you mentally visualize encountering the Holy Spirit? is it accurate?
We often think of God being upstairs, a little removed from where we are and that we are downstairs. and when we are calling from the basement.
The bible describes a world that is God’s world - completely His - it is not different worlds that God lives in but rather that God fills all of it as one space where He is present all along.
Some of us have a habit of removing our mind, body, or our emotions from being filled with the spirit. We are scared of trusting God with our mind, body, or our emotions. If it is emotions, it may be that you are afraid of getting emotional in worship - that you can clap, raise your hands or cry during worship.
Practice praying with the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:26–27“26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
The Spirit intercedes with groans - Maybe the spirit can pray with me in this moment.
The Spirit in Formation
Galatians 5:16; 18; 22-23.
God uses people to help form us into the image of God. Its why we gather in life groups, and other church events. We make gathering a priority because of the way God uses us to bring about the work of God in each other.
Colossians 3:16 “16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Is it the word or the Spirit dwelling with me???? Both!
I dont know how to hear the Holy Spirit. I dont know what it sounds like. The Holy Spirit speaks, through what He spoke (The Bible).
Crayon Illustration
You can by a box of 8 Crayon and now they sell a box of 96 crayons. With the box of 8 crayons an artist could probably paint a pretty nice picture. But with a box of 96 crayons, that same artist would be able to paint a vastly better picture. Why? Because of the depth of color, the greater detail that they would be able to illustrate and the more crayon they actually have to use before they run out.
Now imagine if the box of crayons that you have is reflective of your bible knowledge. If you have 8 crayons, maybe you are familiar with 8 books of the bible. Guess what the picture of God’s will or plan for your life is going to look like? It will be fine. It will be okay. But the more you spend time in the word of God and you steep in the scriptures, guess whats going to happened to your ability to hear Gods voice and your ability to see a picture of Jesus. Its going to have more detail to it. Its going to have more color to it.
Im a holy spirit guy, I just want more of the Holy Spirit. Or maybe you say you are a bible guy and you have just been memorizing scripture but you are not really interested in the Holy Spirit or the ways that He calls you.
It is about studying the bible, the word of the Spirit in a fresh way. Coming to it like its the first time, each time. Where you ask God to speak to you and through you with this scripture. Asking the Spirit to fill you with His word. We are a bible Church. We are a Spirit led church.
Acts 1:8 “8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
