This morning we covered a few more topics tat we can dig into this evening
They included
The Messiah
Jacob the Deceiver
The Son of Man
The Messiah
The Messiah
Is actually translated as the Christ
This morning we saw both Andrew and Philip declare that Jesus was the Messiah
Andrew came out and said it while Philip beat around the bush with by stating he was the one Moses wrote about and so did the Profits
So when they say the messiah, what exactly do they mean
well, the OT predicts the Messiah and the NT reveals Him as Jesus of Nazareth
Its easy for us to see that Jesus was the Messiah, but it was not so easy for them to see it. Not so easy for a lot of Jews back in that time
As we have covered before, the Jews were looking for a different type of messiah
The Jews of this time were looking for a political and cultural savior, not a savior from Sin.
But we know Jesus was just that. He was our savior from sin… and the next time he comes, he will be the savior they expected
So, what are some things the OT tells us about the messiah
what are the proof texts if you will that Jesus is the one that Andrew, Simon, Peter, Philip, and Nathaniel were looking for
and why could they see and and not others?
Lets start with the OT
The OT says that the Messiah must come from Bethlehem
Micah 5:2 “Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; one will come from you to be ruler over Israel for me. His origin is from antiquity, from ancient times.”
Luke 2:4–7 “Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. Then she gave birth to her firstborn son, and she wrapped him tightly in cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”
The OT says that he must be a Hebrew from the tribe of Judah
Isaiah 9:6 “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”
Luke 3:30 “son of Simeon, son of Judah, son of Joseph, son of Jonam, son of Eliakim,”
The Ot says that he must be born of a virgin
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.”
Luke 1:26–27 “In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.”
The Messiah was to have Priestly duties
But Jesus did not come from the line of the Levites
which is the line of the High Priests - of Aaron
So how was he of the priestly order
By the order of Melchizedek
We see that in Genesis 14, alhough we wont read this passage
And Hebrews 6:20 “Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because he has become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
The OT says he must also be a King
Well Jesus was from the Judah, the kingly Tribe
and during his time
he had wise men visit him as the King of the Jews Matthew 2:1–2 “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising and have come to worship him.””
he pronounced that one day he would sit on a throne towards the end of Matthew 19:28 “Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
and Matthew 25:31 ““When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.”
The OT says that the messiah was to be a suffering servant
That is covered in Isaiah 53
we covered that last week
As we can see there are a lot of ways that Jesus fulfilled the prophesy of Messiah
Scholars say 456 and some say at least 300
that depends on how you describe the prophesy, how how they are categorized
either way, Jesus fulfilled everyone one of them
Perhaps this is some of what was discussed during the evening that Andrew and John spent with Jesus
Maybe not, we perhaps may never know
But we do know, that whatever they discussed
Whatever went down that evening
Those men left there changed
Convinced that jesus was the messiah
They may not have know what kind of messiah, but none the less. That he was the one they had been seeking for so long
Jacob, the deceiver and the Ladder to Heaven
Jacob, the deceiver and the Ladder to Heaven
Genesis 28:12–13 “And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground with its top reaching the sky, and God’s angels were going up and down on it. The Lord was standing there beside him, saying, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying.”
The story or Jacob
This relates to this morning as Jesus said Nathaneal was a man without deceit
Summarize the morning and how it flows with Jacob
Summary of Jacbob life
His name literally means “the deceaver”
Born the younger twin
Born grasping the heel of this brother
He had favor of his mother Rebekah
See when she was pregnant with them God gave her a vision that she had 2 nations inside of her
One would be stronger than the other
and the older would serve the younger
Esau the other brother was the strong one
He was a hunter and loved to do what we would call man stuff
Jacob stayed home with his mom
cooked etc
Esau was loved most by his father Isaac
Jacob was loved most by his mother
Jacob in fact stole the birthright from Esau
Esau then vowed to Kill Jacob after his father died
Jacob ran away to Uncle Laben
While on the way there he had the dream we just spoke about
During Jacob’s journey, he had a dream of a ladder to heaven with God at the top and angels ascending and descending. This imagery is mirrored in Jesus’ words to His disciple Nathanael (John 1:51). God gave Jacob the assurance of His presence and reiterated His promise to Abraham (Genesis 28:13-15). As a result of this experience, Jacob renamed the place “Bethel,” meaning “house of God,” and he vowed to serve God.
At one point he split his family up so that when he faced esau again he wouldn't get all of them
well, that very night he wrestled with God
and God gave him the name Israel
Jacob went through a lot and he was by no means a perfect person
But God still used Jacob
in fact he continued his convenant with Abraham through him as Jacob became the father of a nation and the 12 tribes
The disciples we met this morning were by no means perfect men, they each had their flaws But God used them in great ways
Just as he will use and can use us in great ways
Even when and if we think that isn’t the case
The son of Man
The son of Man
Daniel 7:13–14 “I continued watching in the night visions, and suddenly one like a son of man was coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was escorted before him. He was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, so that those of every people, nation, and language should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will not be destroyed.”
This one like a “son of Man” is the Messiah
the one we referred to at the beginning of this lesson
We see the name son of man many times in the OT
Psalm 8:4 “what is a human being that you remember him, a son of man that you look after him?”
Job 25:6 “how much less a human, who is a maggot, a son of man, who is a worm!”
Jesus is a lowly human in that sense
He was born in a manger
One like a son of man
During this text this vision shows several kingdoms set up
we see this is the representations of the beasts
Starting in verse 9 the final kingdom is set up
and this kingdom is the kingdom of God
The ancient of Days, (God) and the “one like a son of man take center stage in this kingdom
like a human
And after all of this the son of man is given essentially the keys to the ancient of days kingdom
it is saying that one like a human will inherit the kingdom
So who is the son of man
we know it is jesus
69 times in synoptic gospels
12 in John
Matthew 16:27–28 “For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will reward each according to what he has done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.””
Matthew 24:29–31 ““Immediately after the distress of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth will mourn; and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.”
Matthew 26:63–65 “But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” “You have said it,” Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy.” “But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.””
Jesus took on early form, that of a man, in order to ackomplish what man could not
Christ was given this glorious kingdom following his work of atonement when he ascended back to heaven
Daniel L. Akin, Exalting Jesus in Daniel (Nashville, TN: Holman Reference, 2017), 90.
Exalting Jesus in Daniel He Is Sovereign in His Man and Plan (7:13–14)
However, Jesus himself declares in Matthew 24:29–31 that the full manifestation and realization of this kingdom will occur when he comes again “on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Jesus Christ did not hesitate to identify himself with the Son of Man in Daniel 7, and neither should we!
Revelation 14:14 “Then I looked, and there was a white cloud, and one like the Son of Man was seated on the cloud, with a golden crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.” O
Folks the Son of man is the messiah
Jesus blended the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 that we talked about last week and redefined what the messiah was
In Mark 14:62 ““I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.””
he weds the title to psalm 110 and the king/priest portrait of the messiah
