Malachi 1:6–14 ESV
6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ 7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the Lord’s table may be despised. 8 When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. 9 And now entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts. 10 Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand. 11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts. 12 But you profane it when you say that the Lord’s table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food may be despised. 13 But you say, ‘What a weariness this is,’ and you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord. 14 Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

8 Ways For God to Receive the Glory

1. Know Your Place (6)

Malachi 1:6 ESV
6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’
Give Him Proper Place in Your life (6)
Honor of a Father (10 commandments)
Fear of a Master
He is God and we are not.

2. Recognize Your Sin (7)

Malachi 1:7 ESV
7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the Lord’s table may be despised.
Polluted= defiled, not holy.
It appears that they were trying to get this past God. God knows.
ILL-- Compare to Anania and Saphira in Acts
you cannot hide your sin from God.
All have sinned...
Wages of sin...
Trying to earn way to heaven with good works means you are trying to hide your past sin from God.
You cannot do enough good to hide your sins.

3. Live in God's Favor (8-9)

Malachi 1:8–9 ESV
8 When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. 9 And now entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts.
Don't Expect God's Favor
The whole point of the sacrifice was to please God.
Why do we give God our seconds and think he is pleased?
He gets our leftover time.
He gets our leftover money.
Sometimes even our leftover furniture.
If it wouldn't please earthly rulers why would it please the holy heavenly ruler?
Favor is offered through obedience.
He has shown us how to live a blessed life.
A holy life is a blessed, favored life.

4. Redeem Your Time (10)

Malachi 1:10 ESV
10 Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand.
Religious activity is a waste of your time.
God would rather they have shut the doors of the temple.
Redeem the time
Ephesians 5:15–17 ESV
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
God looks at the heart.
He would rather someone put a stop to the sacrifices than to offer a sacrifice not worthy.
JESUS- he is the perfect sacrifice, worthy of death.

5. Join God's Plan (11)

Malachi 1:11 ESV
11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.
God's plan is to be famous.
Psalm 76:1 ESV
1 In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel.
Psalm 102:12 ESV
12 But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations.
Psalm 111:4 ESV
4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful.
Psalm 135:13 ESV
13 Your name, O Lord, endures forever, your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.
Don't ask God to join your plan, you join God's plan.
God is always at work around you.
Find where he is working and join in.

6. Honor God's Name (12)

Malachi 1:12 ESV
12 But you profane it when you say that the Lord’s table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food may be despised.
What people think of your name matters.
Living in small town with name like Vallandingham
Your life is only picture of Christ many will ever see.
Your life determines God's reputation.

7. Endure to the End (13)

Malachi 1:13 ESV
13 But you say, ‘What a weariness this is,’ and you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord.
Don't Be Lazy with God's Work -- It is worth it.
weariness is opposite of endurance.
Christians endure to the end. We are "more than conquerers"
Romans 8:37–39 ESV
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Rev 2-3
Revelation 2:7 ESV
7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’
Revelation 2:11 ESV
11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’
Revelation 2:17 ESV
17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’
Revelation 2:26 ESV
26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations,
Revelation 3:5 ESV
5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.
Revelation 3:12 ESV
12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
Revelation 3:21 ESV
21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Word "conquered" is same Greek word translated as "overcomes" in other places.
1 John 5:4–5 ESV
4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

8. Fear God (14)

Malachi 1:14 ESV
14 Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.
Don't Live a Cursed Life
Galatians 3:10–14 ESV
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
We are cursed because of sin.
For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Rom 3:23)
Wages of Sin is death. (Rom 6:23)
Judgement is real. You have to be prepared.
Hebrews 9:27–28 ESV
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
It begins and ends with whether you fear God (6, 14)
Malachi 1:6 ESV
6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’
He desires a relationship with you but he is Holy.
Revelation- eyes of Jesus as fire.
warm or burn?
