1 Timothy 2: 5-6…Our Mediator
Psalm 16:8 “I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”
Introduction...
Introduction...
In Paul’s letter to his son in the ministry Timothy he is preparing him for things to come.
There at the end of the first chapter, Paul charges Timothy to fight the good fight… 1 Timothy 1:18–19 “This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,”
WORK TEXT…TALK, PREACH...
Next Paul encourages him to pray for all men for this is what God wants and desires for all men to be saved....V 1-4
1 Timothy 2:1–4 “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” ....WORK TEXT
And in Paul fashion, he reminds Timothy on how this is possible...
But Paul uses a word here that should catch your attention…Mediator....
A name that you just do not hear that often used about Christ.
The name mediator is only used 6 times in the bible and that is in the New Testament.
Job uses a word that has similar meaning, Job says in Job 9:33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.....KJV.....TALK...
Simply stated, God wanted all of mankind to be saved and he made a way for that to happen.
Why? because man was seperated from Him because of sin
And Paul needed Timothy to understand that he needed to pray for all but to make sure he understood about the mediator
Let’s walk....
1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,”
look how Paul starts it, there is one God...
1 Corinthians 8:4 “Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.”
Ephesians 4:6 “one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
As we teach, preach, evangilize, whatever....we must remember there is only one God....TALK, PREACH
Paul knew Timothy was going to have to face this when he went out in his ministry....
the romans and the greeks had many gods that they served....i loved some greek mythology growing up....but I alway knew that there was only one true and living God....TALK, PREACH...
and now here is our mediator that is between God and man.....
let’s make sure we understand the meaning of the word mediator......
Strongs biblical definition is....one who intervenes between two, either in order to make or restore peace and friendship, or form a compact, or for ratifying a covenant
because of our sins we needed help to go to the Father...
Old Testament had the high priest, who was the only one allowed in the most holy of holies but he was all man and man is corruptible....
we needed a mediator that could truly get the job done...
Jon Courson’s Application Commentary Chapter 2
a Bridge between infinite God and finite man because God Himself became a Man in Christ Jesus.”
Jesus Christ is the Mediator who makes peace
Using Job’s word daysman....
Jesus is the Daysman, the mediator.
1. He can lay His hand on the Father for He declared that He proceeded from the Father and that He and the Father were One.
2. He can lay His hand on us, for He became a man
Look at Paul’s word again....one mediator....
That means that the saints are not able to mediate for you.
2. That means that Mary cannot mediate for you.
3. No other man can mediate for you, only one mediator, the man Christ Jesus.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: Service—Or Circus? (1 Timothy 2)
No other person can qualify. Jesus Christ is both God and man, and, therefore, can be the “umpire” between God and man
TALK, PREACH....
Have you ever been caught in the middle of a disagreement?…TALK, PREACH..
He wanted to be in the middle because he knew that was the only way....that He was the only way...
Jesus said over in John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
How did he become the way, our mediator....look at verse 6.... 1 Timothy 2:6 “who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,”
Paul once again stresses to Timothy so he knew what Jesus had done for us....gave himself a ransom....
ransom meaning ....what is given in exchange for another as the price of his redemption,
Jesus gave himself in exchange for me....he gave up his life for my life....
he got in the middle of me and God to be my mediator because I had sinned....TALK, PREACH
Jesus gave Himself as a hostage, as a payment for our sins. He put Himself in our place and received the punishment and wrath from God the Father that we deserved.
This is the basic message of the gospel. look at the last part of verse 6.... 1 Timothy 2:6 “who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,”
Reading Paul’s Letters to Individuals: A Literary and Theological Commentary on Paul’s Letters to Philemon, Titus, and Timothy Hymn Describing God’s Grace (2:5–6)
Christ Jesus “gave himself” by his self-sacrifice on the cross. In so doing, he became the means by which all people might be delivered.
Those who are saved must come to the knowledge of the truth, for that is God’s appointed way to save sinners
what is this truth? that we have a mediator on our behalf....
who is this mediator? Jesus Christ himself....
and when you know the truth, you must spread the truth....testify in due time....TALK, PREACH...
I have to leave you now but you may call him by something else....
son of God
son of man....
the Lamb of God....
can I call the roll before I go...
you may call Lord of Lords
Isaiah called him, wonderful, counsellor
He’s the Prince of Peace....
Emmanuel...
Matthew called his King, Mark called him, his suffering servant, Luke called him a great physican, John called him, God’s word made flesh...
let’s get personal, I call him my all in all
I don’t know what you call him but if you need a name call him your mediator...
TALK, PREACH, CLOSE...
