TURN & READ i. Luke 3:15-17 ESV “As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John [the Baptist], whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

TURN & READ: i. John 14:15-17ESV “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
TURN & READ: iii. Acts 1:4-8 ESV “4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

B. THE HOLY SPIRIT’S MINISTRY = BETTER THAN JESUS BEING WITH US!!
(Q) ANYONE EVER THINK LIFE WOULD BE BETTER IF WE HAD JESUS in FLESH W/ US???
TURN & READ: a. John 16:7-15 ESV “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

C. The COMING of THE SPIRIT @ PENTECOST
C. The COMING of THE SPIRIT @ PENTECOST
TURN & READ: a. Acts 2:1-12 ESV “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
***WE MUST REMEMBER: PENTECOST WAS a SPECIAL DAY…BIRTHDAY of N.T. CHURCH. a FOUNDATIONAL MOMENT in HISTORY.
DR. FINKBEINER on BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION:
SOME THINGS in SCRIPTURE = EXAMPLE to BE FOLLOWED… (LADDER)
SOME THINGS in SCRIPTURE = PRIMARILY/SOLELY POINT to CHRIST (ARROW)
SOME THINGS in SCRIPTURE = FOUNDATIONAL/ONE TIME EVENTS (BEDROCK)
***HOW MUCH of BOOK of ACTS = FOUNDATIONAL....VS. HOW MUCH = EXEMPLARY is THE DIVIDING LINE FOR MANY!
PERSONAL BELIEF,, BOOK of ACTS = EXEMPLARY in MANY WAYS…BUT MOST of IT = BEDROCK, FOUNDATIONAL EVENTS UNIQUE to GOD’S ESTABLISHMENT of THE CHURCH.
***WE SHOULD ALL AGREE: THANKFUL to LIVE in NEW COVENANT W/ MINISTRY of THE SPIRIT EVEN IF WE DISAGREE on WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.
^^^^WHAT AN AWESOME TIME to BE ALIVE ^^^^

2) The Spirit’s Role in Salvation (FOCUS FOR TONIGHT)
2) The Spirit’s Role in Salvation (FOCUS FOR TONIGHT)
Question for Consideration: What is the Holy Spirit’s role in salvation as it pertains to the presentation of the gospel?
A. SALVATION = SPIRITUAL SOLUTION to SPIRITUAL PROBLEM… A SPIRITUAL VICTORY in SPIRITUAL BATTLE....
A. SALVATION = SPIRITUAL SOLUTION to SPIRITUAL PROBLEM… A SPIRITUAL VICTORY in SPIRITUAL BATTLE....
a. FROM SUPPRESSING to PROFESSING the TRUTH! (see Rom. 1:18-32). SALVATION = FUNDAMENTALLY SPIRITUAL...
TURN & READ: b. 2 Cor. 4:2-4 ESV “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
TURN & READ: d. Eph. 6:10-12 ESV “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

B. SALVATION INVOLVES BOTH CONVERSION & REGENERATION
B. SALVATION INVOLVES BOTH CONVERSION & REGENERATION
a. CONVERSION = BEGINNING of CHRISTIAN LIFE.... HUMAN PERSPECTIVE.
a. CONVERSION = BEGINNING of CHRISTIAN LIFE.... HUMAN PERSPECTIVE.
i. THE ACT of BELIEVING in JESUS…REPENTING of SIN...
THE PROMISE to ALL WHO BELIEVE.
READ: 1. John 1:12-13 ESV “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
b. REGENERATION = BEGINNING of CHRISTIAN LIFE from GOD’S PERSPECTIVE...[1]
b. REGENERATION = BEGINNING of CHRISTIAN LIFE from GOD’S PERSPECTIVE...[1]
i. It can be defined as, “the divine action by which God renews the fallen creation so that it reflects his character.”[2]
TURN & READ: ii. Titus 3:3-7 ESV “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
1. OFTEN: PEOPLE FOCUS on NATURAL && FORGET SPIRITUAL...
“I HAVE DECIDED” CAN’T COMPLETELY REPLACE BEING TRANSFERRED FROM DOMAIN of DARKNESS to KINGDOM of GOD’S BELOVED SON & BEING BORN-AGAIN
SALVATION = MAKING DEAD PEOPLE ALIVE…NOT BAD PEOPLE BETTER....
TURN & READ: iii. Ephesians 2:1-7 ESV “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
EVEN NONBELIEVERS ACKNOWLEDGE CONVERSION to a RELIGION…BUT ONLY BELIEVERS KNOW the SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION of REGENERATION.....

C. HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE in SALVATION:
C. HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE in SALVATION:
AGENT of the DRAWING of the FATHER
BAPTISM of BELIEVER INTO BODY of CHRIST
CAUSING to BE BORN-AGAIN (REGENERATING)

a. NO ONE CAN COME to CHRIST WITHOUT the FATHER’S DRAWING BY HIS SPIRIT...
a. NO ONE CAN COME to CHRIST WITHOUT the FATHER’S DRAWING BY HIS SPIRIT...
i. John 6:34-51 ESV "BREAD of LIFE DISCOURSE”
(TURN & READ) 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
^^^^GREAT THEOLOGICAL ANTINOMY— GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY & MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY.....
NO ONE CAN COME UNLESS THEY’RE DRAWN.... && THE PROMISE is to ALL WHO BELIEVE.
1. The ESV Study Bible has a helpful comment here: “Jesus states the paradoxical and corresponding truth that once people come to Jesus, they will realize that behind their willing decision to come and believe lies the mysterious, invisible work of the Father who all along was drawing them to Christ.”[3]
2.HOW DOES THIS WORK???? WE DON’T KNOW.... SOME THINGS MUST BE APPREHENDED BY FAITH.
**BIBLE TEACHES US ALL WE NEED to KNOW…BUT NOT ALL WE WANT to KNOW/ OR ALL THERE is TO KNOW… GOD’S TOLD US ENOUGH, WE ACCEPT it BY FAITH & WAIT TILL HE ANSWERS the REST in HEAVEN.

D. SPIRIT-BAPTISM = ENTRANCE to BODY of CHRIST & KINGDOM of GOD....SPIRIT MAKING US INTO NEW CREATION “IN CHRIST”
D. SPIRIT-BAPTISM = ENTRANCE to BODY of CHRIST & KINGDOM of GOD....SPIRIT MAKING US INTO NEW CREATION “IN CHRIST”
a. Michael Bird describes this well in saying, “Water baptism is the rite of passage for entry into the church, while Spirit baptism is the point of entry into the Christian life. Baptism is always associated with beginnings in the New Testament, not secondary or subsequent events in believers’ lives. If that is the case, then Spirit baptism is coterminus with conversion.”[5]
TURN & READ: b. 1 Cor. 12:13 ESV“For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.”

E. Those who are saved are “born-again” of the Holy Spirit and made a new creation in Christ!
E. Those who are saved are “born-again” of the Holy Spirit and made a new creation in Christ!
TURN & READ: a. John 3:1-8 ESV Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
READ: b. 2 Cor. 5:17 ESV “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
c. SUPERNATURAL WORK of GOD!
BEING BORN-AGAIN GIVES US NEW CAPACITY for RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT UNBELIEVERS DON’T HAVE!! SEE 2 PET. 1:3-4

F. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING to TAKE AWAY: SALVATION ISN’T ACCOMPLISHED BY MAN or BY MAN’S MEANS....
NO PERFECT “ATMOSPHERE”
NO PERFECT PREACHER/PRESENTER
NO BOUNCY HOUSE
SALVATION REQUIRES a SUPERNATURAL TOUCH FROM HOLY SPIRIT on HEART of UNBELIEVER in RESPONSE to the GOSPEL...
HOLY SPIRIT MAKES ALL the DIFFERENCE!!
a. MARTIN LUTHER has famously said, “The Word comes first and then the Spirit breathes upon my heart so that I believe.”
*****NO ONE of US CAN MAKE SOMEONE a CHRISTIAN!
TURN & READ: i. 1 Cor. 3:5-9 ESV “What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”
1. WE CAN NEVER LOSE SIGHT of the FACT THAT ONLY GOD BRINGS the GROWTH....
a. J.I. Packer says, “While we must always remember that it is our responsibility to proclaim salvation, we must never forget that it is God who saves.”[4]

A. The PRIMARY EVIDENCE of HAVING HOLY SPIRIT = GROWTH in SPIRITUAL FRUIT & TRANSFORMATION INTO IMAGE of JESUS CHRIST.... “SANCTIFICATION”
a. Millard Erickson writes, “The Holy Spirit also works sanctification in the life of the believer. By sanctification is meant the continued transformation of moral and spiritual character so that the believer’s life actually comes to mirror the standing he or she already has in God’s sight.”[6]

READ: b. Rom. 8:14 ESV “14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

4) The Spirit’s Role in Assurance
Question for consideration: How does the Holy Spirit give us assurance of our salvation?
A. YOU CANNOT BE a CHRISTIAN & NOT BE SPIRIT-FILLED! SPIRIT of GOD = TESTAMENT to CHRISTIAN’S SALVATION & RIGHT-STANDING W/ GOD
A. YOU CANNOT BE a CHRISTIAN & NOT BE SPIRIT-FILLED! SPIRIT of GOD = TESTAMENT to CHRISTIAN’S SALVATION & RIGHT-STANDING W/ GOD
TURN & READ: a. Rom. 8:9 ESV “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
TURN & READ: b. Rom. 8:16-17 ESV “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
TURN & READ: c. Eph. 1:13-14 ESV “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
i. The GREEK WORD for “GUARANTEE” in this passage is arrabon, and it means,
1. “payment of part of a purchase price in advance, first installment, deposit, down payment, pledge . . .in any case, ἀ. is a payment that obligates the contracting party to make further payments.”[8]
ii. HOLY SPIRIT = GUARANTEE of FUTURE INHERITANCE… THE DOWN PAYMENT...

5) Takeaways
1. The SPIRIT & THE WORD GO TOGETHER....THEY AREN’T in COMPETITION…WE NEED BOTH...
***EXCESSES DON’T JUSTIFY NEGLECT.
2. SALVATION = SPIRITUAL SOLUTION to SPIRITUAL PROBLEM....
NO ONE CAN BE SAVED APART FROM REGENERATION of HOLY SPIRIT...
WE CAN’T SAVE ANYONE!
REMEMBER: SALVATION - CONVERSION (HUMAN FOCUS) ** REGENERATION (GOD-FOCUS)
3. The FATHER PURPOSED our salvation, the SON ACCOMPLISHED salvation, and the SPIRIT APPLIES salvation to individuals when they believe.
4. HOLY SPIRIT = GIVEN to EQUIP & EMPOWER CHRISTIANS FOR MINISTRY......&&& TO CONTINUE to MOLD US INTO IMAGE of JESUS CHRIST.... && TO GIVE ASSURANCE of OUR SALVATION....
