2) The Spirit’s Role in Salvation (FOCUS FOR TONIGHT)

Question for Consideration: What is the Holy Spirit’s role in salvation as it pertains to the presentation of the gospel?

A. SALVATION = SPIRITUAL SOLUTION to SPIRITUAL PROBLEM… A SPIRITUAL VICTORY in SPIRITUAL BATTLE....

THE PROMISE to ALL WHO BELIEVE.

i. It can be defined as, “the divine action by which God renews the fallen creation so that it reflects his character.”[2]

The ESV Study Bible has a helpful comment here: “Jesus states the paradoxical and corresponding truth that once people come to Jesus, they will realize that behind their willing decision to come and believe lies the mysterious, invisible work of the Father who all along was drawing them to Christ.”[3]

2.HOW DOES THIS WORK???? WE DON’T KNOW.... SOME THINGS MUST BE APPREHENDED BY FAITH.

a. Michael Bird describes this well in saying, “Water baptism is the rite of passage for entry into the church, while Spirit baptism is the point of entry into the Christian life. Baptism is always associated with beginnings in the New Testament, not secondary or subsequent events in believers’ lives. If that is the case, then Spirit baptism is coterminus with conversion.”[5]

1. “payment of part of a purchase price in advance, first installment, deposit, down payment, pledge . . .in any case, ἀ. is a payment that obligates the contracting party to make further payments.”[8]
