Be Spirit Filled Now Sermon Nov 18, 2023 South Bay Christian Church Amos 5:18-24 and Matthew 25:1-13 Introduction: Our October trip to Israel An Oct 7 6:30 AM surprise. The peril of complacency - sudden disaster THEME: On the Day of the Lord ● There are two ways to meet God – in complacency which leads to disaster, or with living faith which leads to eternal victory. ● So, pursue a Spirit-filled life now, with holy fear, because Jesus warns that it may someday be too late. Introduction to the Prophet Amos Amos 5:18-24 “Alas for you who desire the day of the LORD! It is darkness, not light.” The Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids Matt 25:1-13 The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' The Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids 'Lord, lord, open to us.' But he replied, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.' It’s good to be afraid, in the fear of the LORD ● the foundation of knowledge, wisdom, a fountain of life, a secure fortress and refuge ● brings blessings and great delight, helps avoid sin, leads to life, prolongs life, ● rewarded with riches, honor and security ● leads to knowing & being known-by God A lamp filled with oil, what does it mean? ● You had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves. ● Full oil lamp = Filled with the Holy Spirit ● Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. The Holy Spirit, relationally ● Given to us upon repentance and baptism (Acts 2:38) ● Power source for life and witnessing (Acts 1:8) ● Our advocate, and teacher (John 14:26) ● God’s living presence in us (John 14:16-17) The Holy Spirit, personally ● A person who is Advocate and Helper, like Christ but distinct (John 14:16-17, 26 ) ● Personal pronouns (John 16:7-8) and speaks in first person “me” and “I” (Acts 13:2) ● Has mind (Romans 8:27), will (1 Cor 12:11) and emotions: grieved or insulted (Eph 4:30) The Holy Spirit’s divine attributes ● Omnipresent - heavens to depths (Psalm 139:7-8) ● Omniscient - all things, deep things (1 Cor 2:1011) ● Eternal (Heb 9:14) ● Creation (Gen 1:2 and Psalm 104:30) ● Giver of life (2 Cor 3:6 and Rom 8:11) The Holy Spirit’s actions in our lives ● Conviction of sin (John 16:8) ● Teaching, reminding (John 14:26) ● Guiding into truth: revelation (John 16:13-14) ● Empowering believers (Acts 1:8 Rom 15:13) ● Comforting, helping (John 14:16, 26; 15:26) ● Interceding in prayer (Romans 8:26-27) Be Spirit Filled Now
