Class four - Man, His rebellion (12/5/2023)
Intro:
Man originally perfect, God’s image, fellowship with God, intimacy with God. Innocent and holy
God breathed life into man (Gen2:7)
7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
God provided a garden, provision for man (ref: Gen2:8-17)
God created a helper for man (ref: Gen2:18-25)
Man rebelled from perfection against the Holy God and fell (Gen3)
The original relationship between God and His very good creation man.
Aim of this study: To prove that the fall of man was a historical event. We will also look at the cause of the fall.
Outline:
Outline:
Fact one: Adam was a historical person lived at historical point of time. (Gen3:1ff; Lk3:38)
38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
Fact two: The fall is a historical fact
Sin entered through one man (Rom5:12; 1Cor15:20-22) (ref: 1Tim2:13-14)
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
and
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
Fact three: It is an experienced fact
Experienced that there are none good (ref: Rom3:10)
All fall short (ref: Rom3:23)
Additional note on this: Jesus, Luke, Paul all reference to Adam and the fall of man as a historical event.
The cause of man’s rebellious fan - Sin (Rom5:12ff)
The cause of man’s rebellious fan - Sin (Rom5:12ff)
Sin’s essence is selfish (ref: Gen3:1ff, Mt22:37ff)
Jesus says deny self (ref: Lk9:23)
23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
Jesus says must give up all to follow Him (ref: Lk14:25-33)
Sin in example
It a principle (Rom1:20-21; ref: 2The2:4) - it is in opposition of God.
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
It is a state (Mt5:48; 1Pt1:15) that is unlike God
48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
and
15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
It is a act (Mt5:16ff; Jm2:10; 1Jn3:4) that is a transgression of God’s holy law.
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
and
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
Conclusion to this part of lesson: (Gen3; Rom5)
The rebellion was by Adam, it was a selfish act, a choice to act against God which resulted in the fall, death, separation from God
It is a historical act of selfishness, that because sin, death entered the world and man continues to sin and separate himself from God that Jesus came to reconcile sinful man to Holy God. To restore the relationship
It is a historical act of righteousness done by Jesus Christ that reconciled man. Not man’s righteousness actions, but God’s righteous One, Jesus Christ!
If time permits then go onto the next section:
Aim of this section:
To learn the biblical ramifications of sin - its expression
To consider God’s declaration regarding the consequences of sin - its effect
Outline:
Sin in expression
Sin in expression
It is failure - (Gk-Hamartia) means to miss the mark; to miss a road; to miss one’s purposes and plans.”
Failure described
It is universal (Rom3:23; 1Jn1:8; ref: Gal3:22)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
and
8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
It is powerful in its strength (Rom5:21, 6:14, Ref: 7:17, 20)
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
and
14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
It captivates (Rom7:23)
23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.
It enslaves (Jn8:34; ref: Rom6:17, 20)
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
It is lawlessness (1Jn3:4; ref: Rom6:19; Tit2:14) - Gk: Anomia
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
It is unrighteousness - Gk. Adikia (1Jn5:17)
17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.
Sin in effect
Sin in effect
It deceives (Heb3:13; rev12:9)
13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
and
9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
It hardens (Eph4:17-19 ref: Heb3:13)
17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
It kills (Rom6:23; ref: 7:7-14)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
It is physical death (1Cor15:22; ref: Gen5:5, 8, 10, 14, 17, 20)
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
It is spiritual death (Rom5:12, Eph2:1-4; ref: Col2:13)
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
and
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
