What is it that makes a party like this so much fun?

Stuff glows in the dark

It sticks out when something is light in a place that is dark

That’s exactly what Christians are supposed to be like

Matthew 5:14–16 (NLT)

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

Lighting up the whole world

Driving in a city at night

Even at night, you can still see the city

Matthew 5:15 NLT

15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.

This verse mentions a lamp

I brought a lamp!

Let’s see what it looks like when I turn it on

Oh! its so bright

You might think that I should put it on that stand right there, but I have another idea...

What do you think?!?

Well… I guess its not as bright anymore, is it?

What’s the point of a lamp with a basket on it?

It defeats the purpose of the lamp!

In the same way, we shouldn’t hide that we love God

Christians are supposed to tell everybody that they love God

We are supposed to let our light shine for all to see

Hmm… where would be a better place for me to put the light?

Oh yeah… there’s a stand! That can help it light up more of the place

Wait a second… you know what? This reminds me of the verse that we just read! (read it again)

And now that we’ve talked about this… let’s see what the next verse has to say

Matthew 5:16 NLT

16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

What is a good deed?

Being kind

Forgiving other people

Obeying your parents

When we do these things, we help other people to see what God is like
