Review:
1 Corinthians 4:1–2 (ESV)
1 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
How are you doing with being faithful in your servant roll of caring for people on behalf of the Messiah who came and who is coming again?
Deacons - Acts 6 -
Spot and meet tangible needs. -
A deacon should be skilled at spotting practical needs and then taking the initiative to meet them in an efficient manner. But the best deacons don’t just react to present problems—they also anticipate future ones.
Protect and Promote church unity - Just as the seven were tasked to salvage the unity of the Jerusalem church, so deacons today are meant to play a pivotal role as “shock absorbers” in congregational life.
A spirit of gentleness. A willingness to be flexible. The ability to stand on conviction without being combative. unity-building love the Bible so clearly commands.
Serve and support the ministry of the elders.
They are like a congregation’s offensive linemen, whose job is to protect the quarterback. Without them, elders will suffer incessant distraction and get sacked by an onrush of practical demands.
Deaconing is not for the faint of heart. Much of it is thankless—grunt work, not stage work.
Elders - prayed for and with people? Sought out opportunities or be available for people teaching and instructing people with the Word of God?
Do you love His people?
Can you point to things that you have done to demonstrate your love for people since the last time we met?
Can you think of conversations in which you “stewarded the mysteries of God” well as you interacted with people.
Give you a few moments to consider that. We can “train” on things, but they need to be put into practice.
We are here to render assists on behalf of the One who is the Christ. (The One who was the fulfillment of all those OT prophecy…and of course we know who that is. JESUS.Church leadership exists in order to render assistance, in our case to govern and lead this local body of believers.
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Love - self sacrificial love for the good of others.
Joy - perpetual state of gladness
Peace - tranquil (not stirred up)
Patience - a state of emotional calm in the face of provocation or misfortune and without complaint or irritation
Kindness - benevolence and giving to help out others.
Goodness - act of generous giving
Faithfulness - that which is completely believable. Believable evidence…proof
Gentleness - not harsh (meekness - mild) (Salsa…mild, medium, hot) melt your face off…but I won’t.
Self-control - to exercise complete control over one’s desires and actions.
Galatians 5:22 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
1 John 4:8 ESV
8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
When John says, “God is love,” what he means by that is God is disposed to be self-giving for the good of the others. It is in His nature to seek after the well being of others. He is One Who has manifested His love for us when He gave Himself to us and for us.
How did God love us?
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
I have a red marker in my hand.
John 13:34–35 ESV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Galatians 6:10 ESV
10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
