No False Testimony (Lies)

Let’s do a quick review of the verses we’ve learned:
Matthew 22:37–39 NIV
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
We’ve learned the first 8 commandments:
Exodus 20:3 NIV
“You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:4 NIV
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
Exodus 20:7 NIV
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Exodus 20:8 NIV
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Exodus 20:12 NIV
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Exodus 20:13 NIV
“You shall not murder.
Exodus 20:14 NIV
“You shall not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:15 NIV
“You shall not steal.
Today, we are already at the 9th commandment
Exodus 20:16 NIV
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Do you know any sayings or expressions that we use or maybe your family uses to describe someone that is honest?
Here’s an example”
He doesn’t exagerate
He says it like it is.
His word is like money in the bank.
What about somebody who isn’t trustworthy?
I wouldn’t believe anything he says.
Take it with a grain of salt.
He tends to stretch the truth.
Do know who the first couple in the Bible was. When they sinned, they were kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
But after they sinned, they tried to cover up their sin.
Instead of taking responsibility for what they had done, they tried to pass blame to someone else.
That’s often what happens. We don’t want to get into trouble, so we pass blame.
Adam blamed both Eve and God. Eve blamed the serpent, and the serpent didn’t have a leg to stand on.
One of God’s characteristics is that He tells the truth.
John 14:6 NIV
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Exodus 20:16 NIV
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
but it was reinforced in
Exodus 23:1 NIV
“Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.
Being a false witness or telling a lie can be very dangerous.
There is a story of a woman that was spreading lies about her neighbour.
When the neighbour found out, he confronted her, and she immediately asked for forgiveness.
He said, “Sure, but you must do on thing for me.”
“I’ll do anything,” replied the woman.
“Ok, just take a feather pillow to the highest place in town, and let the wind spread the feathers.”
Sounded easy enough.
When the woman came back, the neighbour said that he would forgive her, but she needed to go and pick the feathers up first.
“That’s impossible,” she said, “They’re everywhere.” Only then did she realize the damage her words had done.
We can’t take our words back. We will be accountable for the words we speak. Let’s think about our words before we speak them.
Sometimes, in anger, or even trying to be funny, we say things that are really hurtful.
Ephesians 4:15 NIV
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
Speaking the truth in love is how God defines honesty.
You have maybe heard this saying, “If you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all.” Let’s substitute the word “good” for true.
“If you can’t say anything true, don’t say anything at all.”
We might live in a quieter world if we followed that advice.
Honesty really is the best policy.
