THE GOSPEL OF MARK
Mark is often considered the earliest gospel to have been written. If so, Mark is responsible for evolving a new type of literature, neither history nor biography but the imparting of the Good News (the Old English word is ‘Gospel’) of the reign of God in Jesus. It is the most compact gospel, concentrating not on Jesus’ teaching but on the mystery of his person, the gradual way in which the disciples reach an understanding of him that still remains hidden from the crowds. The paradox is that Jesus is acknowledged as Son of God by the Father and by evil spirits, and yet he is rejected by the leaders of the Jews and is even misunderstood by his own disciples. The gospel has been called a passion narrative with extended introduction; or it may be seen in two halves, the first being the revelation that Jesus is Messiah, the second—after the decisive turning–point at Caesarea Philippi (8:29)—being the revelation of his role of suffering. Mark shows that the rejection was an essential part of God’s plan, foretold in the Scriptures, and crowned by Jesus’ awesome resurrection.
