Psalm 16
Psalm 16
A Miktam of David.
1 Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.
2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have nothing good besides you.”
3 As for the holy people who are in the land, they are the noble ones. All my delight is in them.
4 The sorrows of those who take another god for themselves will multiply; I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood, and I will not speak their names with my lips.
5 Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I will bless the Lord who counsels me— even at night when my thoughts trouble me.
8 I always let the Lord guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my body also rests securely.
10 For you will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful one to see decay.
11 You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures.
1 Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.

Στηλογραφία
To be inscribed on a tablet or monument.
Request - Care from God because he is only one who can protect me.
We can often think of many good things we have - David says the only good thing he has is YHWH.
Comparison of those who follow God and those who dont.
Righteous are:
in the promised land
nobels
have the delight of the king
Recognized by the king
Wicked
sorrows multiply
Rejected by the king
36 They served their idols, which became a snare to them.
37 They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.
38 They shed innocent blood— the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; so the land became polluted with blood.
Proper worship of God reuires us to correctly praise God and to reject worship of false Gods and false worship.
5 Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future.
5 יְֽהוָ֗ה מְנָת־חֶלְקִ֥י וְכֹוסִ֑י אַ֝תָּ֗ה תֹּומִ֥יךְ גֹּורָלִֽי׃
4 synonymous statements about God
My portion
My share
My Cup
You hold my lot (Future)
Rolf A. jacobson - “portion, lot boundaries, and inheritance describe the distribution of the land among God’s people. The tribe of Levi, notably, was given no land as its inheritance; the tithes and offering of the land (lev 6:16-18) and the Lord (Number 18:20) are described as their portion. The term cup symbolizes the abundance of God’s gifts (Psalm 23:5) and also indicates Israel’s ritual thanksgiving celebrations (Psalm 116).”
“The language used here reminds us of the Levites who had no portion or inheritance, but Jehovah was their portion, Nu. 18:20; Dt. 10:9; 18:1,” Kirk. “Let others choose for themselves portions, earthly and temporal, to enjoy; the portion of saints is the Lord eternal. Let others drink of deadly pleasures, the portion of my cup is the Lord,” Aug.—6. The lines
The Levites were to have the Lord as their portion rather than land and this was to be enough for them.
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
We may find ourselves looking for temporal blessing and portion from God, the Psalmist reminds us again that the Lord is enough for us. That he, himself, is the gift worthy of thanksgiving.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
Stories from India
What is the inheritance - the guidance and refuge of YHWH. God has gone with David through his life, he has shown him where to go, He has protected him from his enemy. The presence of God is truly a beautiful inheritance.
Anywhere the Psalmist finds himself is a pleasant place because YHWH goes with him
7 I will bless the Lord who counsels me— even at night when my thoughts trouble me.
8 I always let the Lord guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
The guidance of God is worthy of praise
God will give us comfort counsel and guidnace even in our trouble.
We can have confidence in the counself of the word of God and therefore not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my body also rests securely.
10 For you will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful one to see decay.
We can rest securely knowing the salvation of God.
Applied by Peter to Christ.
27 because you will not abandon me in Hades or allow your holy one to see decay.
Because we are in Christ we will receive the same reward.
11 You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures.
In God we have the following Blessings:
Path of Life
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Abundant Joy
9 “As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.
10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
Eternal Pleaseures
1 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you,
2 since you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him.
3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ.
4 I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
5 Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.
