Luke 17:15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

To begin with Brothers and sisters, Christian Friends, Well Wishers and Saints of God as we look at the tint tone and timbre of text today it ought to make us want to say Thank you Lord you brought us from a mighty mighty long ways. And in keeping with tradition and seasonal norms In American culture Thanksgiving is time to say Thank Lord because Thanksgiving is an integral part of our seasonal feasts. We have every food item you can think of ..... But in all of the thanksgiving celebrations there is usually a turkey, squash, and corn at the center of the celebration. Not to take too much of your time but in American History the European settlers called Pilgrims joined in with Native American Indians from the Northeastern sector of the USA.

And the Indians saved the white colonizers from starvation, by giving and sharing in a meal which later became known as Thanksgiving.

And so keeping in the tradition of the Thanksgiving Holiday which is closely connected to the socialization of American society, I want to teach, talk, and tell us about having thanksgiving through the lens of Luke 17 text in scripture. The setting and scene takes place with Jesus being in an area between Samaria and Galilee. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. And the bible says in verse 12 As he came into a small town, ten men who had leprosy met him there. Leprosy is a serious skin disease and is still highly contagious and can be deadly if you contract this disease. And so the Ten Lepers are on the outskirts of town. They can not legally be around regular people. It was like they had Covid-19 on steroids being in public would be disastrous. And so when they see Jesus the bible says they began to holler out.the bible says in verse 13 that they “lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us”. Brothers and sisters The Jews and Samaritans would not normally live together, but misery loves company and all ten were outcasts. I have experienced frinedships and kinships with people from all walks of life whose had to hear those three awful words you have Cancer. And what I conclude from this is that What difference does race creed color socialization economics, political affiliation, religious beliefs or all the way to your birth, what difference does it make if you are experiencing a living death? These Ten Lepers were in deadly trouble But these men had hope that help is on the way, because Jesus was there, and they cried out for mercy. And that’s a Thanks you Jesus moment. They cry out for Mercy.Mercy in the Greek vernacular is the word Eleeo it means to have compassionate pity on someone whose depending on you to make a difference.

The Ten Lepers cry out from a distance, They can’t legally get close to Jesus, It’s forbidden, But Just One Word from the Lord can turn things around on your behalf. Look at verse 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. One word from the Lord turned the situation around One word from the Lord change the odds. One word from the Lord changed a dead sentence to a life sentence . I shall live and not die! One word from the Lord changed the circumstances around. I can imagine the lepers saying I looked at my hands and they look new I looked at my feet and they did too. What a Mighty God we serve.

An important fact to consider is in verse 14. We find that Jesus still honored the word of God as the authentic standard for living. Jesus said in a very orthodox way Go show yourself to the Priest. Because in the Levitical Law in order to be let back into mainstream society, You have to go and show yourself to the Priest. The Priest had a serious job, he had to deal with all of society’s uncleanness and never complain. Anyway, the Priest had to look at the Lepers examine the Lepers and determine if the Lepers were clean or not. Lord have Mercy. And so if the Priest pronounced you clean, then the lepers were required to go back to the outskirts of the city for seven days. Then a week later the Lepers had to go back before the Priest for the Priest to examine them again. The poor Priest have to be exposed to all that sickness and disease. True story, Saint Francis of Assisi was a Priest in the Catholic Church who had a heart for the lepers. Nobody wanted to deal with the Lepers and St. Francis went to the outer walls of Assisi, and began to serve as the Priest for the Lepers. Historians proclaims that St Francis stayed with them, and served them and ministered to them and Never caught Leprosy. Yes Indeed. St. Francis had compassion for the outcast the forgotten about folk the down trodden folk and it reminds us that Jesus said we ought to be concerned for the least of these. Today in this Thanksgiving Period we ought help those who are in the crowd of the least of these, the crowd of the outcast and the crowd of the rejected.

And as a Pastor when ever the sick calls, I’ll do my best to respond. And the bible says in verses 15 &16 “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. This part of the text is Thanksgiving. It’s being Thankful. It’s having a grateful heart that a divine blessing has come from God on your behalf. The Leper stopped and said in his heart Wait a minute 3x. We’ve been out here on the outskirts of the city. Scores and scores of people have passed us by. The Leper said

But! the Master, the Majestic One, the Messiah the Savior of the world Jesus the Christ stopped and looked pass my faults and saw about my needs. And He said Lord I want to thank you. The bible said the man that was healed from leprosy fell at Jesus’ feet and worshipped Him and Glorified God. And he was a Samaritan.. Whattt Wait nah. The Samaritans and the Jews have no dealing together. They don’t mix but because the ten lepers were dying they were all dying together. And this One grateful thankful appreciative Samaritan came back and worshipped and Glorified God.

And Jesus said in verse 17 “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? Wait nah didn’t I just heal ten people. It made Jesus feel some kind of way, Yeah 3x because Jesus knew that He served them well. Jesus said in verse

18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. Jesus addresses and acknowledges the Samaritan as a stranger. The Samatitan Instead of going to the priest, the Samaritan became a priest, and he built his altar at the feet of Jesus. And Jesus was impressed.

And listen Because the Samaritan Leper came back to Jesus, the Samaritan Leper received something greater than physical healing: Jesus also saved him from his sins.

19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole. Last thing And I’m through it is wonderful to experience the miracle of physical healing, but it’s even more wonderful to experience the miracle of eternal salvation. God Bless You all and Happy Thanksgiving.
