John 1:40–42 (NKJV)
One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.
John 1:45 “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.””
John 1:48–49 “Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!””
Luke 2:15–30 “So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.
INTERPRETIVE PROBLEMS IN 1:15-18: Close-up view of the Baptist Preparing Crowds by testifying of Jesus’ preeminence (1:15-18) Problem: How could the Baptist know the truths of 1:15-18? Aren’t these the apostle’s words? Answer (Part 1): This is close to two months after John baptized Jesus John 1-2 has a series of days (1:29, 35, 43; 2:1), but Mark 1:12 says immediately Answer (Part 2): The Baptist is a prophet—even more than a prophet Answer (Part 3): John must be knowledgeable, so he can magnify Jesus and minimize himself Answer (Part 4): This resolves a major bump in most people’s interpretation of John 1 EXPOSITION OF 1:15-18 CONCLUSION
