Q15 What was our first parent’s sin that caused their fall from fellowship with God? A15 They sinned by eating of the fruit forbidden by God (Gen. 3:6)

Introduction:
Do you ever find yourself saying, “this isn’t the ways things were supposed to be.” Life is too hard, too unfair, too cruel. Why are things this way? Why is their mental disease, disabilities, why is there age? Earthquakes, famine, war, hurricanes… Why do people die? Why do bad things happen? Has it always been this way? Have things always been like this?
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
The Bible tells us that things have not always been like this, in fact at one point things were perfect but then sin happened. We looked at sin last week, does anyone remember Q14 What is sin? A14 “Sin is deviating from God’s Law, either deliberately or accidentally, by our words, thoughts or deeds”
We once lived in perfect harmony with God but then sin took place - tonight we are going to look at what our first parents did that was sin.
Q15 is this, “What was our first parent’s sin that caused their fall from fellowship with God? A15 They sinned by eating of the fruit forbidden by God”
Does anyone know where we can find this in the Bible? - Can I get a volunteer to read?

Actual Event:
Genesis 3:1–12 | 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which Yahweh God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, and you shall not touch it, lest you die.’” 4 And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, so she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. 8 Then they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God in the midst of the trees of the garden. 9 Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 And the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.”
Q15 is this, “What was our first parent’s sin that caused their fall from fellowship with God? A15 They sinned by eating of the fruit forbidden by God”
Let’s have some definitions
Definitions:
First parents: Adam and his wife Genesis 2:25“And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
Fall: To be cut off or removed from relationship
Fellowship: Friendly, positive relationship between God and man
Forbidden: a command given prohibiting or opposing an action
Q15 is this, “What was our first parent’s sin that caused their fall from fellowship with God? A15 They sinned by eating of the fruit forbidden by God”
Why didn’t they just suffer and die, why do we have to experience the consequences for sin?
Basically, Adam, was a representative for humanity - he was like our ambassador and everything he did reflects on us.
Explanation relevant to us of sin and salvation through Jesus Christ
Romans 5:12 | Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
Adam and his wife, who were our first parents, sinned and they passed on the sin nature to every one of their children - that is why I have a sin nature and that is why you have a sin nature and that is why we were born physically alive but spiritually dead in trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2.1)
Q15 is this, “What was our first parent’s sin that caused their fall from fellowship with God? A15 They sinned by eating of the fruit forbidden by God”
Sometimes we focus to specifically on people… Romans 8.20-22 tells us that all creation was put into slavery to corruption, decay and degradation. Right now creation is suffering because of Adam’s sin and ours.
Impact broader than just Adam and his wife
Romans 8:20–22 | 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.
Q15 is this, “What was our first parent’s sin that caused their fall from fellowship with God? A15 They sinned by eating of the fruit forbidden by God”
Does anyone know Romans 6:23“For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Let’s hear how we can be saved from our sinful state
1 Corinthians 15:21–22“For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.”
How do we receive this blessing?
1 Corinthians 15:1–5“Now I make known to you, brothers, the gospel which I proclaimed as good news to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I proclaimed to you as good news, unless you believed for nothing. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”
Christ came as a representative - 100% God 100% Man to live perfectly under His own good law and to die for sins not His own. He paid for every sin past present and future and when He had suffered under God’s perfect wrath against sin for three hours He exclaimed “it is finished” the debt is paid. He was buried according to His own prophecy and He was raised from the dead because there was no sin found in Him. He was seen by over 500 people, touched by His disciples, they ate with Him and knew that He truly was raised from the dead.
Romans 10:9–10“that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.”
1 Corinthians 15:45 | 45 So also it is written, “The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
Christ came that we might have life and have it abundantly, eternally and be restored to fellowship with God
2 Corinthians 5:21“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
