Jesus Buried In Josephs Tomb

Luke 23:50 “50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man.”
Luke 23:51 “51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.”
Joseph it says was a man from a place called “Arimathea” , this place was known to be about 20 miles North west of Jerusalem on the border between Judea and Samaria
Joseph was more than just a council member
He was a member of what is know as the ‘Sanhedrin “
the Sanhedrin consisted of 71 members which included the chief priests, elders , and teachers of the Law
which in todays society you can think of it like the supreme court ,
they had the final say, and were the only ones who could try a KING
In this case Jesus being the king of the Jews , they tried Him
all things concerning the Law went through the sanhedrin.
All of these members of the sanhedrin played a significant role in convicting Jesus and having Him crucified
All of them but one which we see here in these first two verses ,(“Joseph”)
Joseph it says was a good and just man
He disagreed with what happened to Jesus
He was the only one out of all these men who knew that what was being done to Jesus was wrong ( Luke 22:71 “71 And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.””
I could only imagine how difficult it must of been for Joseph to be powerless in this situation
Joseph was also a secret Disciple of Jesus
He was low key
Out of fear of the jews he didn’t want anyone to know that He was a follower
John 19:38 “38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.”
Luke 23:52 “52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.”
Luke 23:53 “53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.”
You have Pilate giving Joseph permission to take the body of Jesus and wrap him in linen and then burry Him.
perhaps Pilate felt remorse for His actions, knowing that Joseph would take care of Jesus Body it probably gave pilate a bit of relief , maybe it made him feel better about himself for the horrible things he allowed to take place
but he gives Jospeh Permission
In Isaiah 53:9 “9 And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.”
It says they made His grave with the wicked but with the rich at death
Isaiah Prophesied that His grave was going to be a grave that was made for criminals and among the wicked
but again Jesus was innocent so the second part of that verse says “But with the rich at His death.”
When he was actually buried Joseph took Him and buried Him in His own tomb that was cut out of rock
The thing to point out here is Joseph was a rich man, obviously he probably wouldn’t have been a member of the sanhedrin if he wasn’t
he wrapped Jesus in Linen which was a symbol of purity in those days
so He wrapped him in this Linen because he was pure, He was purely innocent from all that He was accused
and then He laid him the tomb that no one had ever been in ,
His tomb was brand new .
Joseph Showed great respect to Jesus by burying Him in a respectful manner
Jesus if it weren’t for Joseph a disciple , probably would not have been treated with respect and dignity
who knows what would have happened with His body if Joseph hadn’t been burdened to take care of it
Luke 23:54 “54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.”
Jesus death was on the eve of the Sabbath (known to us as Good Friday)
Sabbath ( means to cease , or rest ) in Hebrew it is pronounced Shabbath
In those days the Sabbath was a complete day of rest from any kind of work
Jesus had just died right before the sabbath was going to start.
His death was on a Friday which meant the sabbath was the next day, (Saturday)
This day was set apart by God as a day of rest
This makes sense why Joseph was in such a hurry to Burry Jesus in the tomb
Luke 23:55 “55 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.”
These women who followed Joseph to the tomb where Jesus was buried were witnesses that He was actually placed in the tomb
they were witnesses unintentionally because they were following Joseph to see what was needed for Jesus body as it laid in the tomb
Get the world out and Get filled with the Lord
Luke 23:56 “56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.”
the women , had to hurry up and prepare spices and oils for Jesus body because they were going to anoint it
there tradition was to keep the law regarding the sabbath which meant they didn’t work
it was a day of rest
so they were in a hurry to get everything in Line so that they could rest on the sabbath (Saturday)
So this brings me to something Id like to talk about for a second
The example here is that these women are getting their worldly affairs in order so that they may honor the lords day
How many of us come to church on Sunday bringing the world with us ?
God gave us the sabbath which we as Christians celebrate on Sunday as the Lords day
He gave us this day as a day to remember Him and to detach from the world and the things of the world like work
How are we getting our weekend in order to celebrate what God has done for us ?
Do we even think of Sunday Like that ?
Im sure some of if not most of us view Sunday as just a regular day , Im guilty of it
At the end of the day it would probably be beneficial if we could come in on a Sunday to worship the Lord with a clear conscience
Free from worry and stress from the pull of the world
How can we have a heart that is fully committed to the Lord on His day ?
When we go to someones birthday what do we do ? we celebrate them and we celebrate with joy
our Hearts are sold out to those people in their moment
Thats the heart we need to have when we celebrate the Lords day, it’s not some legalistic thing but it also isn’t Just another day
Its a day to remember who the Lord is and what He has done for us , here are some verses that we should all recognize
Psalm 103:1–5 “1 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Psalm 77:11–14 “11 I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. 12 I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds. 13 Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Who is so great a God as our God? 14 You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples.”
Psalm 9:1 “1 I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works.”
Again how can we celebrate the Lord with clear mind and a clean conscience ?
When we celebrate the Lord on the sabbath we celebrate Him and nothing else
explain a little more how not to be legalistic( Share stories about being Mormon and how we couldn’t do anything on Sundays
He Is Risen
Luke 24:1 “1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.”
So now its Sunday morning here in the beginning of CH 24,
The women prepared the spices and had been waiting a whole day to come and anoint the body Of Jesus
It says very early in the morning and they and certain other women
Now in Johns account it says
John 20:1 “1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.”
Mary Had been a disciple of Jesus for some time
Jesus if you guys remember earlier on in Luke, cast demons out of her (specifically 7)
So she was a believer , but her and some of these other ladies came to the tomb
Luke 24:2 “2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.”
Im sure the women on the way were thinking that there would have been difficulty moving the tomb
and we see this in the gospel of Mark
Mark 16:3 “3 And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?””
But when they showed up to the tomb, the stone was moved out of the way
Specifically by an earthquake , we see here in Matthew 28:2 “2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.”
So the women show up, on the way are worried about how to move the stone , and then all of the sudden they get there and its moved, now in vs 3 it says ,
Luke 24:3 “3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”
The women must have been tripping out, Just a day and a Half ago they witnessed Jesus be laid in the tomb
they even left to go prepare things for his body ,
they were eye witnesses to the fact that Jesus was dead and buried
but now all of the sudden He’ gone
Luke 24:4 “4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.”
who were the two Men ? they were angels standing at the tomb !
Luke 24:5 “5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”
The women were afraid,
obviously it would have been sketchy if your there
, the dead guy you saw was gone,
the tomb was open
and then now all the sudden two men are standing there out of no where
Interesting how one of the angels mentions “ why do you seek the Living among the dead ?
Jesus was alive !!
Luke 24:6 “6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,”
Luke 24:7 “7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ””
vs 6&7: Jesus predicted that He would be turned on and Killed for who He was
He knew it was going to happen and He told the people, they must of probably taken it lightly
Luke 9:22 “22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.””
Luke 9:44 “44 “Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.””
Matthew 20:19 “19 and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.””
it makes sense why they would have forgotten what was going to happen,” if they took it lightly “
Luke 24:8 “8 And they remembered His words.”
Now all of the sudden the Women realize that what Jesus said had happened
I can imagine it hit them pretty heavily, again there must of been a sense of denial for what was happening
maybe the possibility they couldn’t wrap there mind around what He told them from the beginning
Thats why they remembered all of the sudden
Luke 24:9 “9 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.”
Luke 24:10 “10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.”
Luke 24:11 “11 And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.”
Luke 24:12 “12 But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.”
These ladies all ran back and told these things to the 11 and the rest (11) apostles not 12 because this was after Judas betrayed Jesus
they ran back and let everyone know what went down at the tomb
Mary Magdalene , Joanna , Mary the mother of James and the other women with them
all these women , it must have been very (Loud)
Telling everyone , but the sad part is back in these days women weren’t considered credible witnesses
they were less than that
but Peter , He saved the day. For what ever reason possibly he remembered what Jesus had predicted
He runs back to the tomb to check it out and He sees what all the other women saw
Jesus clothes lying on the floor and no body
Peter was in awe at the fact that what the women said was true .
Jesus Had conquered death and was risen
( share the story of Israel when Kelci and I went and accidentally snapped a Picture in the tomb and at the Door
The last thing Id Like to point out here from these last 12 verses
How often do we Forget Gods word And His Promises ?
How often do we forget what His word says ?
when we remember Gods word and what it says we are not caught in the dark
You wont be Left hanging
we can expect things to happen the way they are suppose to based on Gods word
Psalm 68:19 “19 Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah”
The women in these verses were caught off guard by what happened . Why ?
for what ever reason they forgot what Jesus had told them
They forgot that He was there to conquer Sin and Death by dying on the cross and Rising again from the Dead on the 3rd day
He told them ! and yet they still forgot
How do we prepare our hearts for Gods promises ?
We need to believe what His word says!
How do we believe what His word says ? by reading it and understanding it
Placing all our trust in Jesus is needed in todays society
The enemy wants you to struggle and have bad days and to forget that God is greater
He wants us to forget the goodness of His word
Theres been plenty of times where i’ve gone and asked for advice about something and when someone points me to the word i “ remember Gods word and what it says” IM like shoot how did i forget that .
Why does it take that for me to remember ?
Gods word has a solution for every problem we can have or think of in this Life
It’s up to us to prepare ourselves for His promises
Isaiah 55:8–9 “8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”
The one who created us Has a solution to our every need in this Life
He conquered death and Sin
I could only imagine how those women felt being caught off guard.
Simply if they had remembered what Jesus said, they wouldn’t have been freaked out by what they saw
As the world is out of Hand, things are changing all around us
People are getting crazier
As it says in Luke 21:7–9 “7 So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?” 8 And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them. 9 But when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.””
As all these things we see as christians are happening
we can remind ourselves that Jesus is coming back for us
we get to rest in that , In His promise so that we are not caught off guard Like Mary and Her friends .
Isaiah 53:1 “1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
Isaiah 53:2 “2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.”
Isaiah 53:3 “3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”
We see in Luke how often Jesus is rejected
His face in ch 52 was beaten and battered and to the point people couldn’t look at Him
Isaiah 53:4 “4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.”
Isaiah 53:5 “5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”
Again Jesus was beaten and persecuted
Isaiah 53:6 “6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
Jesus Has come as the son of God to take on our Sin and die for us so that we may have life , eternal life
Isaiah 53:7 “7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.”
Jesus knew there was nothing He could do but carry out His plan, He stayed quiet many times when He could have spoken out
Isaiah 53:8 “8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.”
Isaiah 53:9 “9 And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.”
He was Killed and His grave was suppose to be with the criminals, but you will see in Luke that all changed with Joseph
Isaiah 53:10 “10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.”
Isaiah 53:11 “11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.”
Isaiah 53:12 “12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.”
