Introduction/Review
Last week we studied where we train ourselves to be ready.
We come to the word “Naked” as the word training emphasized?
What did that mean?
It meant that we come unincumbered and without any preconceived notions about what the word of God meant.
And that is where we basically left off - we touched on Labor and strived but we are going to look at that part a little deeper today.
Labor and Strive
Labor and Strive
(question 12)
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all mankind, especially of believers.
What are we labor and striving for?
Godlinesss.
The greek word for labor is
κοπιάω kopiaō - to be wearied or spent with labor, faint from weariness
The Greek word for stive - literally means agony.
So in other words we are weary, spent and in agony.
Now this is not used it the sense of being persecuted but rather in a athletic sense
In other words we traing until we are completely spent and our muscles are hurting so bad that we have to stop for the day.
That is the emphasis Paul is putting on how we need to train for godliness.
Now comes the answer to question 12 - why do we do this -
Let me ask you a simple question - if you ever watched any documentary on Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant you will see how hard they trained.
They would be up at 4am in the gym first - shoot 1000’s of shots a day plus physical training all for one reason - they wanted to be the best.
That is why we do it - we want to be the best
Not for our selves but God
The one who is savior of all men - and especially us (believers)
He deserves no less
Verse 10 is not saying you work for your salvaiton or that God is save everyone eventually - it has nothing to do with how to be saved or the salvation of anyone -
It is a reason for why we work - it is what drives us to strive
It is what pushes us to train more and more everyday
In order to be Godly.
It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance.
Reading and meditating on the Word is where this training begins.

Don’t Let Others Look Down on You.
Don’t Let Others Look Down on You.
(Question 13)
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.
Let me ask you a question - do you think Timothy had to train to do all these things?
I absolutely do.
That is why Paul was being so adamant about training.
5 Attributes of Training
5 Attributes of Training
(Question 14)
Speech - trust me I am living proof you need to train to control your speech.
Life(conduct)
Love
Faith
Purity
The point is this - to be godly is all about training to honor god and love others
In other words following the first and 2 most important commandments.
And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Upon these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”
The apostles and writers of new testament in all their writings laid this out for us - gave us practical ways to apply this.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.
Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they do not make you useless nor unproductive in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
They gave us the tools to succeed as a Christian and walk in this world as and example of Christ - we just have to train and train hard.
I Charge Thee!
I Charge Thee!
(Questions 15-17)
Until I come, give your attention to the public reading, to exhortation, and teaching. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was granted to you through words of prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. Pay close attention to yourself and to the teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
What are these verses?
They are one big call to action for Timothy and for us.
He is saying take all that traing you have been doing and do something with it.
“Pulblic Readin”
Exhortation and teaching
And then never ever ever give up.
Yes it may look like you are down and out.
Maybe you don’t have a large congregation or go to a mega church
But that does not mean God is not using you and you are not being a succecful Christian.
This congregation is no longer here
But look at the effect they have had on the untold millions and millions
Simply becuase Timothy and Paul never gave up on them.
Winston Churchill was asked to give a commencement address. He was introduced, and he stood up and said firmly, “Never quit!” and he sat down. This was probably the shortest commencement address in history.

c. The question we need to ask ourselves is have we quit or are willing to never give up - like Timothy and Paul?
