Text: Revelation 1:15
Introduction: As John gives us the description of the voice of our Lord in glory. I want us to think back for a moment to the voice of our Lord here on earth.
Remember previously we discussed how that John was the one that went all the way with Christ to the cross. In fact, John was the last person on this earth that He spoke to before His death.
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
I want us to consider how closely and how intently John listened to the voice of Christ that day. As through His suffering and suffocation He laboured from that cross the He wanted him to take care of His mother.
I would like us to consider the voice of our Lord as he suffered in our place.
The sorrows of death compassed me,
And the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
The sorrows of hell compassed me about:
The snares of death prevented me.
In my distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried unto my God:
He heard my voice out of his temple,
And my cry came before him, even into his ears.
Jonah also experienced this and prophesied about our Lord.
Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, And said,
I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me;
Out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas;
And the floods compassed me about:
All thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight;
Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Thou wilt shew me the path of life:
In thy presence is fulness of joy;
At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
What contrast between this voice and the voice that John hears when Christ is revealed as the Lord of Glory.
Have you ever been to Niagara falls? I have always wanted to go and see the beauty of it. When I think of the Lord and His voice as the sound of many waters it is what my human mind thinks of. Although I have never been, these are some facts to put into perspective about Niagara falls.
Niagara falls sees 3,160 tons of water flow over its falls every second. This accounts for 75,750 gallons of water per second over the American and Bridal Veil Falls and 681,750 gallons per second over the Horseshoe Falls. The water falls at 32 feet per second over the Falls, hitting the base of the Falls with 280 tons of force at the American and Bridal Veil Falls and 2,509 tons of force at the Horseshoe Falls. A combination of the falls the water falls a total of 325 feet. The average noise in decibels is 97. To put that into perspective, a whisper is about 30 decibels, while the average noise inside of a busy office is around 70 decibels. Anything under 70 decibels is considered safe for prolonged exposure. 70 decibels is also at the point where conversations begin to be greatly hindered. 97 decibels would be comparable to someone standing next to a car and the horn being blown. I have heard that taking the boat out on the Niagara River is the most spectacular and breath taking way to see it.
I imagine that John’s experience of the Lord’s voice as many waters was pretty spectacular and absolutely breath taking!
God thundereth marvellously with his voice;
Great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.
And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
This is the voice of great power! Read Psalm 29
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
The voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
It is through the power of His voice that the world was spoken into existence.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Read: Genesis 1:3, 1:6, 1:9, 1:14, 1:20, 1:14, and 1:26
It is also His voice which will one day speak the demise of all His enemies...
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple,
A voice of the Lord that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
It is by the power of His voice that He saves, resurrects the living, and condemns the dead!
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
It is also with the power of His voice that He comforts!
Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.
