Zoomorphism - God being described with animal features
Anthropopathism (An-thro / Pot-tha-sis-im) - God being described with human emotions
Psalms is a collection of 150 ancient Hebrew poems, songs, and prayers that come from different eras in Israel’s history
The Book of Psalms in broken into 5 Books or divisions
Psalms 1 and 2 is considered an introduction to the whole book
The final two division of the Psalms concern God, not David or any other human, as king.
The book moves from a human king to God as King.
Psalm 139 is one of the best-known and beloved psalms in the collection.
God’s omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence are the subjects of David’s meditations in this beautiful psalm.
Omniscience - He’s all knowing
Omnipresence - He’s everywhere at the same
Omnipotence - He’s all powerful
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
Searched: to examine (analyze) v. — to consider in detail and subject to an analysis in order to discover essential features or meaning.
explore, search out, discover, probe, sound out, examine, test, i.e., try to find out information about an object or event
Known: to know (experientially) v. — to know or have knowledge about (someone or something); normally as acquired through observation or the senses.
David expresses that God has tested Him…
You know who I am through observation of me…
You know what I am made of…
You know how I respond to situations
You know my temperament and my personality
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up…
You know my every move…
You (Discern) understand my thought before I even think them…
You know my thought process…
You know how I cognitively think..
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Search: you are aware or take notice
You take notice of my daily routine and from morning to night
Acquainted: to know (discern) v. — to know the nature or character of.
All my ways (Ways - Conduct)
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
David is teaching us a lesson about the Omniscience of God
Even before a word is on my tongue…
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Hem: to envelop v. — to enclose or enfold completely with or as if with a covering.
“You are like a fence (hedge) that protects me.”
In verse 5b “you lay your hand on me” is also used in a good sense of protection and care
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.
God being all knowing.... was too hard for him to comprehend
David moves to God Omnipresence
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
Where shall I go… From your Spirit?
Where shall I flee from your Presence?
Two Rhetorical questions
Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
sheol n. — the place where the dead reside.
You are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
“Wings of the morning” This poetic expression is often interpreted as a metaphor for the swiftness or speed of light
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea.....
If I travel at the speed of light to the uttermost parts of the sea!
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
Even there.....
Wake UP!!!! You can’t run and you can’t hide…
God is at your There!!!!
God wants to Lead
to lead (guide) v. — to take or guide somewhere.
God wants to Hold
Hold: to grasp (seize) v. — to begin holding something.
You have to remember…
This was David’s cognitive expression through the spirit of who God was to him.
That’s why the theological terms were expressions of God in the writers eyes.
But who is He to you?
God you know me…
You have tested me…
You know my conduct...
You know my thoughts
You know my words before it hits my tongue
And when I try to hide.... When I try to flee
You are there....
Telling me I’m not going to forsake you!
I abide in you…
I want to guide you!
I am holding you up!
I can’t comprehend why but I’m thankful…
Wake Up!
I’m moving from THERE!
