I. What are you thankful for today?
II. Ever felt unappreciated in life?
III. Many will say “thank you” this Thanksgiving day, but what about the days to come?
IV. We like to ask God to do things for us.
V. We have a lot of reasons to give thanks to God.
VI. Read Philippians 4:6-7. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
VII. Whatever! My stepfather used to like to say, “Whatever!” When he disagreed about something he would say, “Whatever!” Philippians 4:8 uses that word in a different way, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
VIII. Read Philippians 4:11-13 and comment. Philippians 4:11-13 lets us learn a little secret about giving thanks, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
IX. So what are we thankful for as Christians?
X. Conclusion. God gives good gifts to the unthankful and the thankful people of our world. We are thankful and we praise God especially this day for the gift of faith in Jesus that enables us to thank Him for all of His many gifts and blessings. As the psalm writer says, “O give thanks unto the Lord! For His mercy endures forever.” We can give God thanks and praise not only this Thanksgiving Day, but every day, as we journey through life and receive more and more wonderful gifts from God each new day. Paul in Philippians 4:19-20 sums up the reason to give thanks in these words, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.”
