Future Of Israel
State:
Israel is going to be an issue of public discussion for a while now. We as a church should be versed in the biblical aspects of Israel
Where did it all start?
The Fall of man and God’s plan of redemption for man
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
Point #1
A promise that the woman’s offspring (son) will bring someone who is going to crush satan’s head.
Israel is still waiting for their messiah because they refused Christ
The Gentile world received Christ
State:
Sin progressed until God finally said this....
5 When the Lord saw that man’s wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every scheme his mind thought of was nothing but evil all the time, 6 the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 Then the Lord said, “I will wipe off from the face of the earth mankind, whom I created, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.” 8 Noah, however, found favor in the sight of the Lord.
State:
God sent the flood
Only Noah and his sons survived
Ham, Japheth and Shem
God gave a prophecy about what these three sons would end up doing.
Genesis 9: 26
26 He also declared: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan (Son of Ham) be the servant of Shem. 27 May God expand the territory of Japheth; may he (God) dwell in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.” (BSB)
This is where God says he will be working through the line of Shem
PICTURE OF SHEM TO ABRAHAM
Who came from Abraham?
Issac, Jacob and 12 Tribes of Israel.
State:
It is from Shem that we get “Shemites
The greek for Shemites is “Semites”
Scripture says that God will dwell in the tents of Shem (Semites - Israel)
Did God dwell with the Semites? (Israel)
This was said/prophesied 2400 years before Moses came to deliver Israel
How would they dwell with the Semites?
Pillar of Fire by night/Cloud by day
Tabernacle
PICTURE OF TABERNACLE
How does all this Unfold...
Abraham told to leave his native country and told to go to Canaan
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.
Abraham gets to Canaan and this is what God says to him...
8 And to you and your future offspring I will give the land where you are residing—all the land of Canaan—as an eternal possession, and I will be their God.”
State:
Abraham is promised: (Unconditional Promise)
God is going to do this even if Israel does not obey
Israel is still wondering in unbelief…
Great Nation -
Fullfilled
Land -
(never completely filled- about to be filled)
What is the battle about in Israel ?....LAND
Blessing to the nations
1st Monothiestic view of God
Scriptures came through Israel
Showed us God’s Character by how God dealt with them
Brought a savior into the world
What was God’s intention for Israel
5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. 6 And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”
Role of a priest
The role of a priest is to mediate, or restore the relationship between two parties.
In this example, who are the two parties?
The only other characters in the story at this point are Yahweh and the nations.
So Israel’s role is to reconcile all the nations to Yahweh.
How would Israel do this?
Israel was meant to faithfully represent God by how they live as a community of love, justice, and worship of Yahweh alone.
An Example of what this might have looked like.
Queen of Sheba came to see Solomon
6 She exclaimed to the king, “Everything I heard in my country about your achievements and wisdom is true! 7 I didn’t believe what was said until I arrived here and saw it with my own eyes. In fact, I had not heard the half of it! Your wisdom and prosperity are far beyond what I was told. 8 How happy your people must be! What a privilege for your officials to stand here day after day, listening to your wisdom! 9 Praise the Lord your God, who delights in you and has placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king so you can rule with justice and righteousness.”
Did Israel continue to live in God’s will…? No
At Mt Sinia, God made a CONDITIONAL covenant with Israel
5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me.
But they choose to follow other God’s and forsake justice and mercy
Dueteronomy 28 describes the consequences for this....stuff israel is still experiencing to this day.
950 years after entering the promised land, they are sent into exile for disobedience and idolotry in Babylon
But God said they would be restored after 70 years.
11 This entire land will become a desolate wasteland. Israel and her neighboring lands will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years. 12 “Then, after the seventy years of captivity are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and his people for their sins,” says the Lord. “I will make the country of the Babylonians a wasteland forever.
Isaiah says about this 150 years before Cyrus is even born.
28 When I say of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd,’ he will certainly do as I say. He will command, ‘Rebuild Jerusalem’; he will say, ‘Restore the Temple.’ ”
State:
God’s unconditional promise to Abraham, Issac and Jacob is being fullfilled even with Israel’s disobedience.
Second Temple era
The tribes of Judah and Benjamin resettled as a people/nation from 516 BC – 70 AD (586 Years)
Rebuilt the temple…and later it was expanded by King Herod
What was Israel’s spiritual state when Jesus arrived?
Divisions
Spiritual corruption
Spiritual leadership was totally carnal
What happened in AD 70 ?
Destruction of the second temple
Was this prophecied ?
25 Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times. 26 “After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.
Jesus also prophecied......
1 As Jesus was leaving the Temple grounds, his disciples pointed out to him the various Temple buildings. 2 But he responded, “Do you see all these buildings? I tell you the truth, they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
PICTURES OF TEMPLE DESTRUCTION
What happened to Israel after AD 70 ?
4 For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods.
24 They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.
