Introduction (5m)

Are you a deep sleeper or a light sleeper?

Explanation (5m)

You may read this story and be tempted to think Jesus is a deep sleeper

No surprise he was tired bearing in mind all he had gone through

Pharisees accused him of being controlled by Beelzebub; mother and brothers tried to kidnap him, take him home; teaching crowd so large, had to get into boat, finally left crowd behind to cross Sea.

But the disciples mistake his tiredness for simply not caring about them

Mark 4:38 NLT
Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
Uncompassionate, rude: sleep? Only care for yourself? Don’t you care if we are destroyed?

They had forgotten or been blind to how many times J had already destroyed the evil that haunted them and those around them

Doesn’t our fear of being drowned by our circumstances mean we are like that sometimes?

We accuse Jesus of not caring for the situation we’re in. Understandable. Afraid of winds and waves in our lives, our corps, our town, our nation. Feel alone. Fear disapproval, rejection, isolation, failure, losing one’s job, meaninglessness, pain, illness, death. Not even G knows or cares about what is happening or how we are feeling.

But we forget or are blind to the many ways he has saved us throughout our lives

What is Jesus’ response to the disciples?

Mark 4:39 NLT
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
Said nothing to them, but instantly responded to their enemy the sea.

Even in his human tiredness, Jesus knew their heart rates, their heavy breathing, their innermost thoughts, and their emotions, and he did care

He displays his ultimate authority over the forces the disciples were helpless to control and which threatened to overwhelm them.

Application (5m)

God’s interruptions in our lives - like the storm - keep us humble, because it is then we realise that only his love and his care can see us through

Mark 4:40 NLT
Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

This is not a message about us having more courage when faced with difficult circumstances, it is about finding ourselves in them and choosing to turn again to the Lord of the wind and wave, the one more powerful than anything life can throw at us, and having faith in him

Whatever we fear most at this moment in our lives, Jesus says: Don’t be afraid. I am here. I am with you.

He gives us peace in the storm of sorrow

Death to the glory of the life to come.
Darkness to light.
Reminds us of the love of God.

He gives us peace when we are tossed about by doubt and tension and uncertainty

When we don’t know what to do - he shows the way.

He gives us peace in the storms of anxiety and worry

Worry is the chief enemy of peace - for ourselves, an unknown future, about those we love.

He is our Creator, our Sustainer, our Goal in life, and our Saviour. Believe this and we will weather the storms of life

It’s OK/natural to have doubts. But that’s where trust comes in. Faith is choosing to trust Jesus even when we have our doubts

Will you hand over your doubts this morning and allow Jesus to calm your storm?
