What Jesus said about envy (Coveting)

Let’s quickly go through the Commandments
Matthew 22:37–39 NIV
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Now from the Ten Commandments:
Exodus 20:3 NIV
“You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:4 NIV
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
Exodus 20:7 NIV
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Exodus 20:8 NIV
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Exodus 20:12 NIV
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Exodus 20:13 NIV
“You shall not murder.
Exodus 20:14 NIV
“You shall not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:15 NIV
“You shall not steal.
Exodus 20:16 NIV
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Today, we’re going to look at the last of the Ten Commandments.
Exodus 20:17 NIV
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Covet means to want something that belongs to someone else. When people covet, they break the tenth commandment, and when they break the tenth commandment, usually they end up breaking one of the other commandments.
Here’s some examples:
I want you to help decide which commandment is being broken.
If people (covet) or want something more than they want God in their life, which commandment are they breaking?
#1
If what a person wants becomes so important to them, it can become an idol. Which commandment is being broken?
#2
If you envy and kill to get something, which commandments are you breaking?
#6 & 10
If you really, really want something, and you take it without paying for it, which commandment are you breaking?
#8
If you don’t tell the truth about somebody so that you can get what you want, which commandment are you breaking?
#9
When we covet, we dishonour God’s name, because anytime we break any of the Ten Commandments, we bring shame upon God’s name.
The reason that the 10th commandment is so important is when we break it, we are breaking several others as well.
In Luke 12, Jesus told a story about a rich man. We’re going to read it, and I want you to think about it.
In Luke 12:13-21
Luke 12:13–21 NIV
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
One thing we can’t do is take our money with us when we die.
1 Timothy 6:6 NIV
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
One thing that we can do is send our money on ahead by what we give and what we do with what God has given us.
God doesn’t condemn us for being rich. In the story of the rich man, he was condemned because he had forgotten God.
As you grow up and make plans for your future, never forget to keep God as the center of your life. He needs to be #1 in our plans.
Let’s watch Douglas talks.
