Intro

1 Timothy 6:20–21 ESV
O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.

Final Charge

O Timothy,
Term of endearment
Even though Paul was hard on him at times
Here is a reminder that Paul cares for him as a son
There is also an urgency
But like a father who wants him to get something
Remember not just Timothy, but O Timothy
Timothy must remember he is an instrument of the Lord
Good servant of Christ Jesus
To be this instrument he gives one final charge in this letter
He ends where he begins
with this charge
and to not delay

Grace be with you

What does grace mean to you
This is grace to y’all
Think about the exact things we don’t know from this book
What exactly they were saying in there irreverent babblings?
We don’t know
Often we don’t
What has been revealed is for our benefit
What has not is for our benefit
Error comes to us in many different forms
changing because much is the same
but much is different
It should remind us all of the free gift of GodGuard the deposit

Deposit entrusted

He has entrusted timothy with a responsibility
to take this treasure of truth
this as if Paul is telling Timothy
Remain strong Timothy
I have trusted YOU with this for a reason
Therefore he is to guard
2 Timothy 1:14 (ESV)
By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
What does he mean by guard the deposit
His personal life?
His own ministry?
The apostolic message?
Paul has deposited something that at the proper time he wants to see it intact
Elvira’s house
Entrusted with all these family heirlooms

Avoid

Avoid
To turn away from
They are going on a path
after worldly riches
I’m reminded of Simon the sorcerer
Acts 8:20 ESV
But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!
The reason for guarding
What do we need to avoid
Dexter Willow story
Can I kick him
There are those who directly oppose
contradictions
Antithesis of what he is guarding
It’s contradicting illogical argument
looking to be logical
They argue against the truth
They all say the same thing
Do they not have a mind of their own
they don’t they only know the falsehood
And they will quickly contradict themselves when they move off script
They are Irreverent Babblers
This talking is profane
once again carries the idea of opposite
Babbler
talk with no substance
1 Timothy 4:7 ESV
Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;
Under the Disguise of Knowledge
Falsely called
They are calling something “knowledge” that isn’t
do they think it’s true yes
but it’s false
Say words correctly
I was reminded of something that we use to say, “saying Bible things in Bible ways”
What does a counterfeit christianity sound like?
It will use Bible terms improperly
It will use non-bible terms to define things that the Bible clearly defines
This takes lots of form
Of course false religions
Islam, Hindu, Mormonism, Jehovahs witness
Challenges about strange questions
Did Jesus really exists
what about supplemental information/bad commentaries
philosophy
psychology
theology
They think the Bible can’t solve the real problems we have
Make the Bible a how to manual
we can fix this on our own
We can make the Bible mystic
If I just open my Bible and read that passage
what is the Gospel that was entrusted?
A list of rules?
The idea hey your life is good but you could have a real good life with Christ
NO
You were dead
you’ve sinned against the creator
But good news
God sent his son
To save you
To give you a new life
Never forget you are saved
from what
sin and death
Swerved From the Faith
They deviated away from the truth
Lost their way
1 Timothy 1:19–20 (ESV)
holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Think about how destruction comes when we avoid the truth
marriage
raising kids
simply right and wrong accord to God’s word
along the road of life can we lose our way if we are not on guard?

How do we guard the truth

Watchful
there is a real attack
Teach the Truth
How important is this that we teach this message?
Do are kids know that this is a message they should give their lives for?
Revelation 2:13 ESV
“ ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
Jude 3–4 (ESV)
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
Realize the Responsibility
you have God’s word given to you
do you contend
will we follow Timothy?
Avoid
don’t be involved
but provide a light
Remember God’s Grace
this is how we do this
all of us have fallen short
We can do nothing apart from his grace
how can we think right?
How can we be bold?
unless we have the Spirit of God in our lives through his grace
Titus 2:11–13 ESV
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
