Jesus Greater than

Angels
we started this year by talking about how Jesus is greater than anything else.
Hebrews 1:4 ESV
4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Angels were the one who delivered the law to the Jewish people. so there was a great significance placed on Angels. as they were seen all through out the scriptures as the great messengers of what God was doing.
Since Jesus is greater then the angels it means that what ever message he delivered was more important then the previous that were delivered
we also see the amazing thing is that Jesus being high above angels chose to lower himself and to die. as time Maki Put is “Jesus is greatest Glory and humility”
so there is a warning in the text to no neglect what Jesus has told and delivered to the people
Moses
Moses was one of the most important figures within the old testament, he lead the people out of Egypt and to the edge of the promised land.
Moses was additionally the prophet to whom the law was delivered. meaning Moses was a huge deal.
law governed all of Jewish life and practice
law is how they honoured God
Through Moses God provided way away to be known, the first time God names him self is with Moses at the burning bush. Moses served as a mediator between God and man
Going on the mountain
talking to God on their behalf, appealing that the lord would have mercy on this sinful group
Aiding the creation of the whole priestly system and tabernacle the dwelling place of where God would live
Moses was the greatest prophet in all of Israels history, The all knowing God made him self known through Moses
Moses was just a picture of what was to come.
Hebrews 3:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.
Moses was part of Gods story, Jesus being God and with God was writing the story.
by saying Jesus was greater than Moses we see him as the absolute best of best. there was no other prophet that could come close to competing
Moses is simply apart of the story
Priests
priest were and are people who preform religious rites orders services and ceremonies.
Most nations had some form of priesthood this was not just something for the Jewish people however there were very specific requirements for Israels priests
Descendants of Aaron: Moses brother
of the tribe of Levi
they must have their beard a certain way
wear cool outfits and follow the Law to the t
The problem was that the priests them selves were not perfect people.
Hebrews 5:1–4 ESV
1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
the priests would make sacrifices and atonement the same way that was instituted by Aaron back with the establishment of the law and tabernacle all the way back in Exodus the problem was is that priests are still people who sinned and needed to atone for themselves as well as the church
the priests of Israel were able to empathize with weakness of others because they them selves were weak. if you come up to me and and confess sin I get it because believe it or not I am also a sinner
There was something more needed we had a promise that the messiah would be a royal priest but he would need to be something more then what Aaron's line was. this priest had to be set apart from this patern of sin an death

Order of Melchizedek

The messiah needed to be in the priestly order but jesus wasn't a levite and didn't belong to the line of Aaron.
there is one more Priest that is possibly the most mysterious figure in the scriptures
Genesis 14:17–20 ESV
17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Abraham at this time Abram had just one battle and he comes through Salem or Salem which means peace and would later be come Jerusalem
Mel is the king of Salem but also a priest, Melek king Righteous sedque king of righteousness
couple things to note.
1: he blesses:
in this tradition he puts him self above Abe by blessing:
Abe was the fore father of the nation and served almost in a priestly capacity him being blessed
2: he receives worship
receives a tithe which we all know is a form of worship
This a good king who serves as the high priest of God the most high. He is the only one in scriptures who is both a king and priest, the priest in the line of Aaron were prohibited from serving in that capacity.
Mel isn't references for another 1000 years
Psalm 110:4 ESV
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
- this psalm is a prophet piece describing what the messiah will be like. that someone in the house of David will become a priest forever in the line of Mel and will rule and reign
Now we come to
Hebrews 5:5–10 ESV
5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; 6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Conclusion

jesus came im gonna live a as a servant live below
Hebrews 4:14 ESV
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
hold fast :rubber gonna met
what does it look like to draw near
and drawn near
James 5:13–17 ESV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
