Luke 22:48 (NASB95)
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
(Acts 1:12-26)
Matthew 26:47–50 (NASB95)
47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.”
49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
The Betrayal:
God was wiser than Satan. The Lord of goodness outwitted the Prince of Evil, allowing prophesy to be fulfilled and Jesus to be declared the Messiah.
Wasn’t Joseph a type of Jesus?
Sold into slavery by His brothers
Wasn’t He to be another Sampson?
By whose strength the gates of Hell will be tore down from its posts
Bound by his people to be delivered to the adversary
He was the anti-type of David?
David was deserted by Ahithophel, his friend and counselor.
Psalm 41:9Even my close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Psalm 55:12–14For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him. But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend; We who had sweet fellowship together Walked in the house of God in the throng.
Psalm 55:20–21He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has violated his covenant. His speech was smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were asofter than oil, Yet they were drawn swords.
It was appointed that Jesus would die, but the main question is how? How would he fall into the hands of His adversaries?
Will they capture Him in conflict / war?
No. b/c He would appear unwilling to go
Will He run away and hid until He cant any longer?
No. b/c a sacrifice isn’t something that can be hunted down
Will He offer Himself up to them?
No. That would excuse / pardon the people who murdered Him!
He MUST… be betrayed by His friend. And there’s nothing worse than that… he bore the worst suffering IMAGINABLE, feeling the wicked kiss of His disciple.
One of the many reasons it happened this way is found in a parable.
My Prayer:
Lord, preserve me from every false teaching
Never let me betray you
Purify my heart and my sin
That I may remain in unison with you.
Think of those who had beaten Jesus, stripped Him and cast lots for His clothing, had nailed Him to the cross, and would spit on Him, place a crown of thorns on His head, and ridicule Him. They had a choice to make. Judas had a choice he had to make. We have a choice to make.
We can be around the church, we can attend services, we might even act like we are a Christian BUT if we just go through the motions without a true change, we too are just as lost as Judas.
But theres another choice in the matter… Jesus has made the choice to forgive you. 1 Corinthians 15:57 ESV57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
