Potent Potable

Jesus always existed as a son of God. Jesus is now beginning to testify about himself.
Jesus’s Goof Wine Points to a New Way of Purification v.1-11
Jesus has the authority to assure in a new covenant. Mary felt for some reason responsible of running out of wine. Jesus was addressing His mother in a polite and respectful way. He was distancing Himself from her during His ministry.
His hour has not come, his crucifixion.
John 8:20 “These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.”
John 12:23 “And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”
This hour was His very central point of His ministry,.
Mary’s concern was abut the wine, Jesus’s concern was about fulfilling the will of His Father.
He solve the problem (the lack of wine), but more importantly He glorified His Father.
The external washing of their body was symbolized of their internal moral purity.
Jesus is satisfying the need, but also He is reviling that He is the messiah.
Amos 9:13–14 ““Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the plowman shall overtake the reaper and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed; the mountains shall drip sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it. I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.”
- As the messiah he is assuring in the restoration.
- Jesus is giving something better. A new and better covenant, A new way to reconciling to God.
A sign is a significant display of power that points beyond itself to the deeper realities that could received with the eyes of faith. D.A.Carson
A sign points to something. It is pointing that he will clean the sins of the people by His blood. Jesus’s good wine is pointing to a new way of the purification of the people,.
2. Jesus’s Resurrection Will Point to His Authority Over the Temple v. 12-22
This is happening during the time of Passover
The temple “market” is completely different what is worship about.
Temple was given to people. Where would glory of God dwell.
Jesus sees the drastic derailment what the temple should be.
Malachi 3:1 ““Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.”
The first messenger was John the Baptist and the second messenger was Jesus. He came to his own.
Psalm 69 “To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. Of David. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord God of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. When …”
Jesus was not speaking about the physical temple. Temple where God’s glory would dwell. Jesus itself was the embodiment of God’s glory, He dwelled with us and tarbunacled with us.
3. Jesus Isn’t Fooled By Superficial Faith v. 23-25
There were:
The ones who didn’t believe
The ones who believed
The ones who believed but not really sure in why exactly , didn’t fully understand.
