By faith our flesh died with Jesus and our spirit rose with Him in His Resurrection
Because of our faith in Jesus death and resurrection we are adopted as children of God and joint heirs with Christ
The chief privileges of justified believers—peace with God (5:1–11), union with Christ (5:12–6:23), freedom from the law (7:1–25) and life in the Spirit (8:1–27)
18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. 24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Holy Spirit Intercession
Holy Spirit Intercession
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Heard “when we hurt so bad we can’t pray” the Holy Spirit prays for us
But not just then; it’s every moment…
The fall that causes us and creation to groan in anguish AND expectation has wrecked us so bad that without help not only can we not pray right, we can’t pray at all.
It’s only by Son and through the Spirit do we have access to the Father
Ephesians 2:18 “18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”
But when we do pray the only way to pray like we are supposed to is by the Spirit of God
1 John 5:13-15 “13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
The ONLY one that perfectly knows the will of God is God Himself
Intercession:
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary Intercession
Act of intervening or mediating between differing parties, particularly the act of praying to God on behalf of another person
Intercession by the Holy Spirit happens when we hurt and when we don’t
It’s even happening when we sin! It should give us great confidence to know that as a child of God the Holy Spirit is praying for us at all times, when we can’t as well as when we won’t!
“The children of God have two divine intercessors. Christ is their intercessor in the court of heaven (cf. vs. 34; Heb. 7:25; 1 John 2:1). The Holy Spirit is their intercessor in the theatre of their own hearts (cf. John 14:16–17 ‘16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.’”- John Murray.
The Golden Chain of Salvation
The Golden Chain of Salvation
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
The present sufferings in verse 18, the groanings of creation itself in 22 to the times when only the Holy Sprit can pray for us “all working together for God’s purpose”
With verse 28 Paul helps us see that there is no part of life that isn’t under the authority of Christ . So who are “them”
Them that love God
Romans 8:7–8 “7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”
Every lost person is hostile to God and it doesn’t matter if that hostility is from ignorance or active participation.
“Them” are the ones that look like Jesus
The people that God foreknew, He predestined to look and live like Jesus
Those God predestined to look and live like Jesus were the ones He called
The ones God called, He justified
The ones God justified, He will glorify!
God is for Us
God is for Us
31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
If you are saved by the blood of Christ Jesus then God is for you. You know this because Jesus was delivered up for you on the Cross
If God would give His only begotten son for you, what would He keep from you that would be for your good and His glory.
Doesn’t mean we get everything we ask for ( remember Romans 8:26 “26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:” and James 4:3 “3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” )
The Intercession of Christ
The Intercession of Christ
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Paul uses “elect” as a title referring to believers here and three other verses on Colossians, 1 Timothy, and Titus
33: Who can charge? The answer is that no one can bring a charge against the ones that God justifies
34: Who can condemn? The answer is no one can condemn us because it was Jesus that died, was resurrected, and is seated on the right hand of God and it is by Him we are justified
35: Who or what can separate us from the love of Christ?
Can tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Not these or even death can and Paul emphasizes this by quoting a Psalm
36: Psalm 44:22 “22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.”
depicts the persecution of Israel by the nations. They were not suffering because they had forgotten Yahweh or turned to a foreign god. Instead, they were suffering for Yahweh’s sake, because of their very loyalty to him:
We aren’t guaranteed lives of ease or comfort when we’re saved. Suffering happens in a fallen world. And it’s not just from our sin that we suffer, sometimes God shows His glory in allowing His people to suffer
37: It’s in ALL THESE THINGS that we win through Christ!
So what does that mean… to be more than conquerors?
No Separation
No Separation
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Chapter 8 began with Paul pointing out “there is now no condemnation”:
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Paul ends Chapter 8 with “no separation”:
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In between those bookends, Paul explains WHY those statements are true NO MATTER HOW YOU “FEEL”!
That Romans 8:6 “the mind set on the flesh is death but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace”
But that Romans 8:37 “37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
To be saved:
Is to be loved by the Father who chose us (Ephesians 1:4 “4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:”
To be bought by the Son 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 “19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Assured by the Spirit Ephesians 1:13–14 “13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
To not be saved:
Is to be blind 2 Corinthians 4:4 “4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
Condemned John 3:18 “18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
2 Thessalonians 1:9 “9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”
