Intro
We talked about what Love is: Loving God and Loving others
We started a series Who is God? Breaking the Mold
Our last service we talked about how our minds try to figure out who God is and so we make Him smaller and compare it to something we are familiar with
We saw how the Israelites did this
God did amazing things, miracles
They made Him into a golden calf
We need to resist the urge to put God in a box, mold if you will, and be willing to let Him show us who He is
Like Moses
Afraid at the burning bush - hid his face
As he got to know God, he would spend time with Him and Moses’ face would shine (light up) when he spent that time with God!
And we can have the same relationship with God!!!!
So let’s get to know who God is!
So let’s go to the beginning
God is our Loving Creator
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Stop there: If we could just believe the 1st 5 words of the Bible - “In the beginning God created” then the rest of the Bible, the rest of getting to know who God is, what He has done, what he wants to do in your life, is easy!!!
Let’s read Genesis 1:1-5
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
So this tells us that before there was anything, there was God and it is from Him, from Him speaking it out, that all things began
Without His touch, nothing could be - He is our Creator!!
We can’t fathom, or fully understand God’s bigness
He created the sun, stars, universe!
He created the microscopic organisms and the huge Blue Whales
He created plants to take in carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen and he created man to do the opposite
And as crazy and big as all that is to understand - the craziest thing about it is that same God wants us to approach Him, and share in a relationship with Him!
God, who created everything with purpose and love, made you and wants to have a relationship with you!
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
God the creator, created it all, and all for a purpose.
God also intentionally designed His creation to have needs or to be dependent on Him. We need food, water, air, and shelter.
God is providing for your right now - breath in - even the air you just breathed!
He created us to need relationship even, friendship & love - and He wants to provide that as well!
That is our 2nd Point - God is our Provider
31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
God knows all of your needs and provides for them
He knows you need oxygen and food
He knows you needed to be here tonight and provided someone with a job to afford a car and gas to get you here, for electricity in this room and heat
He knows you need someone to know that you are hurt and that you matter
He knows you need help studying algebra
And, God is with us in the struggles of life - you are never alone
He doesn’t always take away the obstacles, the struggles, the pain
Jesus had difficulty & struggles too, even to a horrible death on the cross
But it was thru that very terrible death that turned to victory on the cross and His resurrection that we have hope that this same God will provide for us and always sustain us
You see just like he created the flower to make oxygen to provide for us, He allowed His son to die on the cross to provide a covering, a permanent covering of our sins so that we would not be separated from God anymore!
My final point is that God is the Sustainer of All Life
What does it mean to sustain something?
To sustain is to provide strength, encouragement, and to give support
Remember what we read in Acts 17 when Paul said “For in him we live and move and have our being/exist” - GOD KEEPS US GOING!!!
8 Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
6 So we can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper,
so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?”
6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
God will complete the good work he started. What he created He will provide for and sustain, and Jesus is our hope!
Conclusion
He wants to help you! But He will not force that relationship - you get to choose because that makes it a relationship
That is who God is! Not a tyrant. Not a dictator. Not a controlling God that gives you no choice
He is the Creator and He is the Provider and He is the sustainer
Maybe you would say you don’t know God the way we are talking about tonight
Do you want to know Him better? Ask Him into your life!

Discussion Questions
Do you see God’s intentional design in his Creation, and, if so, what examples could you share?
How would believing that God created you with great care and intentionality change the way you see yourself? Do you believe that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?
Action for this week: Read Psalm 104 and take note of all the ways you can see God as Creator and Sustainer of life and all things. Then share something you’ve learned or that jumped out at you with a friend or family member.
