In the first week of Advent, the body of Christ reflects on the watching and waiting of the Lord. Gripping onto living hope, we await divine rescue and salvation from the captivity of sin. God speaks to his church to awaken them from spiritual darkness by bringing them back silently and patiently, anticipating the return of the Son.

Illustration - Advent calendar downstairs in the living room. We waited patiently for 25 days for Christmas to arrive.
Waiting on Christmas and waiting on Christ are two separate events. One anticipates gifts under a tree, the other waits for a child in a manger.
Advent means “arrival.” We need hope to carry us through the darkness of night.
Scripture Reading: Mark 13:24-37
Watching and waiting on God means having our eyes opened. Seeing he fig tree produce fruit and being awake for God’s arrival.
Spiritual alertness is the sin of our age. We are spiritual distracted and cutoff from the things of God.
Which is why we must wake up!
Advent is all about watching and waiting on God.
How do we watch and wait...
1. Silently and patiently in constant prayer (head)
2. Meditating on the Word (hands)
3. In hope that our Savior is coming (heart)
We are spiritual awake when we live knowing his coming is near.
Advent is not about the Christmas season, its a reminder for his church to be ready for the king.
Wake up! Be ready for Christ is coming soon.
