Message:

I have attended or officiated a lot of funerals over my years as a staff pastor. Many were for people who lived a long and good life. Others were far too young and the question that many ask the Lord, why? Only to discover the profound truth that God is God and we are not. We must trust in the goodness of who He is.
I have listened to countless eulogies…some with deep and profound impact. While other families struggled to put two words together to share about the life of their loved one.

The Legacy question - What story are you writing, that you want us others to talk about when you’re gone?

Legacy: What people remember when we’re gone.

Psalm 112:6 “Such people will not be overcome by evil. Those who are righteous will be long remembered.”
Psalm 112:5 “Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.”

Legacy: What God remembers when we’re gone.

Hebrews 6:10 “For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.”

A Legacy Person has eyes that look beyond the temporal:

2 Kings 6:8-17 When the king of Aram was at war with Israel, he would confer with his officers and say, “We will mobilize our forces at such and such a place.”
9 But immediately Elisha, the man of God, would warn the king of Israel, “Do not go near that place, for the Arameans are planning to mobilize their troops there.” 10 So the king of Israel would send word to the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he would be on the alert there.
11 The king of Aram became very upset over this. He called his officers together and demanded, “Which of you is the traitor? Who has been informing the king of Israel of my plans?”
12 “It’s not us, my lord the king,” one of the officers replied. “Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in the privacy of your bedroom!”
13 “Go and find out where he is,” the king commanded, “so I can send troops to seize him.”
And the report came back: “Elisha is at Dothan.” 14 So one night the king of Aram sent a great army with many chariots and horses to surround the city.
15 When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha.
16 “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” 17 Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.
It is important that we have eyes that look beyond the natural. That we see what God can do through this church in Spokane, in our region and in the world.

What do you see when you look around?

Do you see despair or hope?
Do you gospel opportunities?
Do you see the church adapting to a changing world?
Do you see how you can make an impact with your life?
Turning Point’s hopeful vision. Ultimately, our desired legacy. What people would talk about after we are all gone.
I see a church that welcomes home every individual who walks through our door, where they can Know God.
I see a vibrant church without walls every day of the week! To reach the unchurched wherever they are at.
I see a church overflowing with love.
I see people closely connected to each other, even across generations.
I see people living life together and Finding Freedom in Jesus – mirroring the book of Acts.
I see a thriving community of Jesus followers who are growing healthy – physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
I see a church with more people in small groups than those who attend our weekend service.
I see a church where people are taking next steps in their journey with Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, discipling others with Biblical truth and helping them discover their purpose.
I see a church full of people who are engaged in bible reading and prayer.
I see a vibrant student ministry that brings in youth city-wide to connect with God and each other.
I see a church that cultivates next-gen to be effective apprentices for Jesus within their generation.
I see an overflow in generosity, giving of both time and money for Kingdom purposes, and using whatever resources God has given us to make a difference.
I see a church where our love for Jesus is demonstrated in how we serve – both locally and globally through missions.
I see the church developing Jesus disciples trained in leadership who can be sent into every area where God has called them.
I see a church represented in multiple locations, bringing the church where others are located.
I see a church reproducing ourselves through church planting that impacts the Kingdom.
Lastly, I see a church that is unwavering in Biblical teaching because God’s Word is life.

A Legacy Life

Legacy people have an eternal mindset.
They see this life through the lens of eternity. John 4:35 “You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.”
2 Corinthians 4:18 “So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
The Church that I see realizes that none of this can happen on their own ability. Instead they are a church that is committed to prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit. I see a Church where Jesus is made famous and all of the glory goes to God. The goal isn’t to live on earth forever, but to leave something that does last.
Legacy people understand sacrifice. They choose to do less for themselves so they can do more for others. Matthew 6:19–20 NLT “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.”
Ephesians 5:15–16 NLT “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.” Today I will live as if this is the day that will be remembered.
