Review from last week:
We are looking at a Geneology today
Some might be tempted to think of a Geneology as something my son calls “BORING”!
Geneologies are important.
Doesn’t Paul warn us against getting caught up in Geneologies?
Are you ready for a quick flight through the Old Testament? 512-5512 (PIC)

Order out of Chaos (People): “Abraham to David” (vs. 1-6)
Order out of Chaos (People): “Abraham to David” (vs. 1-6)
It is all about Jesus! (v. 1)
The book- being written by Matthew, a former tax collector, Matthew writes so show unbelieving Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.
of the genealogy- God is about to do something new
of Jesus Christ- His family tree
The son of David- Messianic line, royal line
the son of Abraham- Jewish line, the father of the Jewish people
These two individuals were very well known to ever Jew, kind of like there are people in your family that everyone knows about.
A Nobody to a Nation: A From Gen 12- 1 Kings/1 Chronicles (vs. 2-6a)
Abraham (Sarah and Haggar)- why start with Abraham? His is not the beginning of humanity? He is the beginning of the God’s people, the Father of many nations. To the Jews, he is very imortant! Matthew is writing his account to show the signifiance of Jesus to the Jewish people.
From Ur of the Chaldeans- (PIC) the first Jew was not a Jew and he was not from Jerusalem or anywhere in Israel.
The father of Issac- let’s not forget the struggle that this couple had with furtility. We read that “Abraham father Isaac” and we just move along. But don’t forget, that did not happen until “his body was as good as dead” at 100 and Sarah was 90?
Isaac (Rebekah, Laban)
the father of Jacob- not the firstborn, but received the double blessing after Esau sold his birthright.
Jacob (Leah and Rachel)
the father of Judah- first born
and his brothers- this makes up the 12 tribes of Israel
These three, “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” make up the first patriarch refered to in “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”. God is creating order out of chaos, a blessing to the nations.
Judah (Shua, Canaanite woman, Tamar his daughter-in-law)
the father of Perez (breach)
and Zerah- twin sons, Perez put his hand out first and the midwife put a scarlet thread around his wrist, but then his brother was born before him
by Tamar- Remember, she deceived Judah and possed as a prostitute, because he had not given her a husband.
Perez
the father of Hezron
Hezron
the father of Ram- “Aram”
Ram- “Aram”
the father of Amminadab
Amminadab
the father of Nahshon
Nahshon
the father of Salmon
Nothing much in this time period is recorded about these men. But we do know that there is 400 years of captivity in Egypt, the Exodus, Red sea, Mt. Sinai, the 10 commandments, 40 years in the wilderness…and the Holy Spirit is at work fulfilling God’s plan.
Salmon
the father of Boaz
by Rahab- the prostitute that was helpful to the spies from Joshua in the conquest of Jericho (not Jewish).
Boaz
the father of Obed
by Ruth- Moabitess
Obed
the father of Jesse
Jesse
the father of David the King
This has to be true in order for Jesus to thus be called, “The KING of the Jews”
David
the father of Solomon
by the wife of Uriah- Bethsheba

Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
God is starting something new with Abraham and the Jewish people. Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
The Holy Spirit was and is used to create order out of Chaos!
From the creation of a people
to the Leader of a Nation
We are coming into the Christmas season, some of our families are wierd, some of the are blended, some of them have unresolved conflict. So what do we do? Allow the Holy Spirit to make order out of Chaos, starting with you! Maybe you don’t have family around you at all. Jesus’ family on earth was not perfect, but his family in heaven is.
4 women in this list, and not the 4 (Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah) that the Jews often highlight. The four that are mentioned are all Gentile and 3 out of 4 had sorted pasts or where morally questionable. This displays God’s grace and a focus on Gentiles, showing that they have a place in Jesus family and kingdom. “Matthew is surely saying that the gospel is for all people, not Jews only, and that the gospel is for sinners. It is a sinful world, and Matthew is writing about grace.

Which verses or words would you like to study a little more this week?
Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
This section dealt with the “Kings of Judah” mostly evil and responsible for leading the children of Israel away from God, putting their trust in other nations to save them in moments of fear,
Maybe you would be considered “Religious Royalty”, your grandparens/parents were really involved in starting Central, or were missionaries, Sunday School teachers, Pastors, Deacons, elders, etc. Just because Jesus sat/sits on the throne of your parent’s heart, does not mean that you will let Him sit on the throne of your heart. Papa’s suit.
So what does this teach us about the HS? Well, 2 Peter 1:21 “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
we heard that in all of this, things were God’s doing
We interact with a major prophetic portion in Isaiah.

What is your heart clinging to today, “Religous Royalty” or a “Royal relationship”? Oh Pastor Jeremy, that is so corny! Sure, the words are, but is the concept?
Transitional phrase: From Chaos to order and then from Royal order to religious chaos! What a cycle! It proves that even though there is somone on the throne, doesn’t always mean that they are following God. He allows them tog into 70 years of captivity in Babylon in order to deal with the snare of idolatry.
Royalty to Obscurity (People): “Deportation to Jesus” (vs. 12-17)

Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
From Abiud to Jacob, they are mearly men, no history, no ackalades, nothing. But without them, we never would get to Joseph or Jesus.
So what do we learn about the HS in this section? Look at Zechariah 4:6 “Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” If you are going to build a foundation for your life, it is not about my might, nor my power, but the work of the Holy Spirit!
