This is the season of advent. Advent is a traditional time set aside for awaiting the Messiah and what he brings with him.
Hope
Peace
Love
and Joy
And as people awaited the Messiah’s first coming, we the church await his second coming.
Traditionally speaking Each week of december before Christmas was to be spent meditating on these four things, Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy.
So let us begin with Hope.
Before Jesus’s first coming people were eargely awaiting the hope of the coming messiah.
There are over 300 prophecies that point to Jesus in the old testament.
Some of these would be simple to fulfill others harder.
the probability of one man fulfilling just 8 of these prophesies is 1 in 10^17th

The earliest comes from Genesis and Adam and Eve.
Even in the midst of the fall, God brought hope
the Snake crusher.
Genesis 3:14–15 “The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.””
Each prophecy about the coming messiah brought another ounce of hope to the world.
So, lets look at some of the prophecies concerning the Birth of Jesus, that people would have started see those 2000 years ago.
English Standard Version (Chapter 1)
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23  “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
This prophecy comes from Isaiah
English Standard Version (Chapter 7)
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.
The virgin, or “young woman” will give birth to a son, his name will be Im - anu - el, God with us.
He shall eat curds (milk) and honey and he will know how to refuse evil and choose good.
The name Immanuel, “god with us” tells us something specific about who the messiah would be, He would be God among men. Fully God an Fully man
We can recognize him by the sign that even a child, eating milk and honey, he will know how to reject evil and choose good.
He will live a perfect life.

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6  “ ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for from you shall come a ruler

who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ”

This comes from Micah

2  But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,

who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,

from you shall come forth for me

one who is to be ruler in Israel,

whose coming forth is from of old,

from ancient days.

3  Therefore he shall give them up until the time

when she who is in labor has given birth;

then the rest of his brothers shall return

to the people of Israel.

4  And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD,

in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.

And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great

to the ends of the earth.

Jesus’s birth in Bethelehem was foretold by the prophet micah, bethlehem a tiny little town, but it was the birthplace of King David.
The Messiah born in bethlehem would be the one to Shepherd the earth.
A child who lives a perfect life,
A ruler who will set things right.
So when people starting hearing of a Child born in bethlehem, to a woman who had known no man, you can imagine the exictement.
One of the first to recognize what was coming was Zechariah, the father of John the baptist.
John’s birth was foretold to Zechariah by an angel, and he was struck mute until John was born, and at his birth Zechariah began to speak again and he prophesied over his son

67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

68  “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,

for he has visited and redeemed his people

69  and has raised up a horn of salvation for us

in the house of his servant David,

70  as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

71  that we should be saved from our enemies

and from the hand of all who hate us;

72  to show the mercy promised to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant,

73  the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

74  that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

might serve him without fear,

75  in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

76  And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

77  to give knowledge of salvation to his people

in the forgiveness of their sins,

78  because of the tender mercy of our God,

whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high

79  to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

He knows that Mary is with Child, and that the child is the messiah, and he sees all the prophecies coming true. And he knows that his son John will be the one to prepare the way for Jesus. Echoing Malachi and Isaiah

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

3  A voice cries:

“In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD;

make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

4  Every valley shall be lifted up,

and every mountain and hill be made low;

the uneven ground shall become level,

and the rough places a plain.

5  And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,

and all flesh shall see it together,

for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Zechariah also saw Jesus as the light of the world coming to a people lost in darkness referencing Isaiah again:
English Standard Version (Chapter 9)
2  The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
3  You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
4  For the yoke of his burden,
and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
5  For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
and every garment rolled in blood
will be burned as fuel for the fire.
6  For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7  Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
The people who saw the birth of Jesus knew what this meant. Just in his birth he fullfilled dozens of prophecies about the messiah.
They had hope, they saw the light.
Church: We have the same hope today.
We are awaiting Christ’s return,
He promised to come back, and we are commanded to wait for his return.

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

Church we are waiting with anticipation for our blessed hope, the return of Jesus Christ.
That’s one of the reasons why we Celebrate Christmas, because we know Jesus came once, and we can have been promised that he will come again.
So we can celebrate the Light of the word coming into the world during the darkest time of the year.
