Last week we kicked off Luke with a Prophecy regarding the birth of John, who would become John the Baptizer.
We were introduced to someone special: an Angel named Gabriel. Today, as we continue in the Gospel according to Luke, we begin again with this Messenger from God. That is what an Angel is, a messenger from God. This messenger from God first appeared to deliver a prophecy to Zachariah. He again appears here. He delivers another Prophecy.
Prophecy, in its simplest form, is message relating to a future event, promised by God. We know that a prophecy is true when it occurs just as God said. Oftentimes these future events seem highly improbable. Sometimes they seem strange. And on occasion, they seem to telling us that the impossible will happen; Because with God, Nothing is Impossible!
Luke 1:26–38 CSB
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. Then the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.” Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?” The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. For nothing will be impossible with God.” “See, I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:26–27 CSB
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
There the messenger appears, Gabriel. Sent by God. Then we have the information to let us know all the important relative facts:
Who: The angel Gabriel
What: Went to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to a man named Joseph.
Where:Nazareth in Galilee
When: in the 6th Month
Why: TO deliver a message! A Prophecy! TO reveal something that is going to happen!
Luke 1:28–29 CSB
And the angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be.
Luke 1:30–33 CSB
Then the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.”
Oh my what a prophecy! But check this out: This is not just a new prophecy. This is a reminder of a prophecy that was already told, and is now getting more details!
2 Samuel 7:12–16 CSB
When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals. But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.’ ”
WOW!
Luke 1:34 CSB
Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?”
Oh NO! If you remember Zacharaih, it seems she will soon be punished.
Luke 1:35–37 CSB
The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Ok, First lets go back and tackle something interesting.
Mary asks “How can this be?” and doesn’t get punished.
Zachariah asks: “How can I know this?” and gets punished.
It seems like they are asking the same question, but they are not.
When Zachariah asks, “How can I know this”, his punishment is due to a lack of faith, while being a Priest to God most High, WHILE standing in the Holy of Holies.
He has a doubt issue. A Faith issue.
Hebrews 11:1 CSB
Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.
Faith is confidence and assurance.
Zachariah lacked faith, so he asked for a SIGN!
Basically, his question was a request for some form of a sign to know that the message sent by God was true.
Once again, Abraham and Sarah already showed that age doesn’t matter when it comes to having a baby.
Mary’s question is not a faith question. It is not a doubt question. It is a logistics question. Mary had never been with a man before. So this was something IMPOSSIBLE by all known standards.
We all understand that a certain action must take place for pregnancy to occur.
So Mary is asking a question regarding the logistics. In a sense, it is what do I need to do.
And guess what the Word of God says about questions like this?
Proverbs 25:2 CSB
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to investigate a matter.
So Mary’s question is appropriate because she just wants to know what is required of her.
AND, there is another difference to remember:
Zachariah was a priest to God most high.
Mary was a teenager.
Who does God expect more from?
James 3:1 CSB
Not many should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we will receive a stricter judgment.
Now let’s go back to the Messengers response:
Luke 1:35–37 CSB
The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. For nothing will be impossible with God.”
You can tell by the answer that the nature of Mary’s question was inquisitive to the HOW this would work, given her virgin status.
The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Most high will overshadow you. This is how this child will be called the Son of God.
Then he turns to a revelation: Elizabeth is 6 months pregnant! Mary may not have even known! A Revelation. Your Relative Elizabeth, has conceived a son, despite her old age.
And the assurance:
Nothing is impossible with God!
Luke 1:38 CSB
“See, I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Her response is HUMBLE!
I AM the Lord’s Servant!
May we all say that! That we would all humble ourselves before the Almighty God Most High, who is over all things, capable of all thing! To whom nothing is impossible!
Maybe right now you are praying for something that seems impossible. Maybe you are thinking: I desperately want to see thing happen, but it is impossible. It will never happen.
Let me tell you something about the impossible.
Roe V Wade was the law of the land. That’s what we were told. Its law, and it will never change. It is to imbedded in our nation. Where is it now?
HISTORY! Because Nothing is impossible with God! It’s HIS STORY! Since Roe was overturned in June 2022, at least 30K babies who would have been aborted, have life!
What is your impossible? Have a loved one strung out on drugs? That’s a hard battle, but it is NOT impossible! With God all things are possible! God works. We just had our first Thanksgiving with a dear family member who was so gone that he was homeless on the streets for years, OD and tossed on the side of the road, coded in the hospital. You don’t get more gone that that! But today he is sober, working, has an amazing relationship, looks fantastic! Forging ahead in the glory of God!
What’s your impossible?
Marriage on the rocks or worse? You better hit your knees and start praying! Because if you want God to show up, you better humble yourself before the Lord! I AM THE LORD’S SERVANT!
We have marriages restored right here in our church! Families reunited right here in our church! From ADULTERY TO AMEN! AMEN!
What impossible thing is in your prayer life right now?
Don’t have one? OH MY friend you better get one! Because yes it seems impossible, but nothing is impossible with God!
ANd God said this, and this is crazy!
John 14:12 CSB
“Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
Jesus tells the disciples that yes they have seen miracles. They have seen fantastical things that they cannot believe, yet they have witnessed. And they will do even greater things because Jesus goes to the Father and sends the helper to live inside of us; the Holy Spirit.
What is your impossible?
